The following short biographies of 533 of the 602 men who served in the Battalion during the War were compiled using various record sources such as the U.S. Census, World War II Army Enlistments, Social Security Death Index, the Combat Unit Journal and General Orders of the Battalion, Published Obituaries, Army Personnel Records, A Brief History of Deuce-O-Deuce, Individual Death Personnel Files, Troopship Passenger Lists and information submitted by Battalion veterans or family members.

Abeyta, Alfred was born in New Mexico on 30 September 1907.  He was a private first class in the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 24 February 1941.  Alfred was assigned to “A” Battery.

He died on 27 June 1980 at the age of 72.  Alfred is buried in the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO.

 

Ablett, Elmer F. Jr. was born in Pennsylvania on 17 June 1914, the son of Elmer and Rose Ablett. He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Pittsburgh, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.  Elmer was assigned to “A” Battery. 

Private First Class Ablett was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Elmer died on 7 October 1991 in Lee Co., Florida.

 

Adams, Cecil H. was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Adams was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Adams, Charles B. was born in West Virginia in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Mahoning County, OH.  Charles was assigned to “A” Battery.  Private Adams was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.

Pfc. Adams was promoted to corporal in March 1945. He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Charles was then promoted to Sergeant on 6 September 1945.

 

Akers, William L. was born in Missouri in 1909.  He enlisted in the Army on 4 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, MO.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Linn County, MO.  William was assigned to Service Battery.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Akers was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 13 October 1945.

 

Aluotto, Joseph J. was a private first class who was assigned to Service Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His MOS was Railway Signal Operator (185) and Cook (060).

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to Service Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Joseph embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Ambrose, Alfred J. was a private assigned to “B” Battery in January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His MOS was Automatic Rifleman (746).

 

Anderson, Leonard G. was born in Pontotoc Co., Oklahoma in 1908, the son of Julian J. and Vivian Anderson.  He was a Private in the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 8 January 1942 at Camp Barkeley, Texas.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pontotoc Co., OK.  Leonard was assigned to HQ Battery.

Private First Class Anderson was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Andrick, Joseph A. was born on 23 July 1925 in Pennsylvania.  He enlisted in the Army on 1 December 1943 at Pittsburg, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.  Joseph died on 13 May 1991 in Pennsylvania at the age of 65.

 

App, Kenneth William was born on 17 April 1917 in Ohio, the eldest son of William J. and Anna App.  Kenneth was of German ancestry.  He grew up in Massillon, Stark Co., Ohio.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Akron, OH.  Kenneth reported to the Reception Center at Fort Hayes, OH on 26 December 1942.  He received his basic training at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma in early 1943.

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Kenneth W. App was killed in action on 24 November 1944, along with Private First Class Joseph L. Marzocco, while on special duty as radio operators with the 2d French Armored Division.

Arbaugh, Glavis R. was born in West Virginia on 7 September 1915, the son of Isaac and Virginia Arbaugh.  He enlisted in the Army on 14 October 1941 at Fort Hayes in Columbus, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Licking County, OH.  Private Glavis was assigned to “A” Battery.  He was promoted to private first class in March 1945.

Glavis died on 23 January 1999 in Ohio at the age of 83.

 

Arnold, Claude E. was born in Oklahoma in 1920, the son of Nathan J. and Olive F. Arnold.

In August 1940, President Roosevelt ordered the National Guard of the United States into active service. Between 16 September 1940, and 6 October 1941, the National Guard brought into federal service more than 300,000 men, in 18 combat divisions, as well as numerous non-divisional units, including 4,800 men from the 29 National Guard observation squadrons. The number of Guardsmen federalized doubled the strength of the active Army, and the National Guard observation squadrons, due to their high state of training, helped to expand the U.S. Army Air Forces.  Claude enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Cherokee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Alfalfa County, OK.  Claude was assigned to “A” Battery. 

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Arnold was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Ashil, Melvin was born in New York on 2 May 1919, the eldest son of Phillip and Frances Ashil.  His father was a Russian Jew.  Melvin enlisted in the Army on 29 September 1943 at New York City. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Kings, New York City.

Melvin was assigned to HQ Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.

Private Ashil was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

Melvin died in Florida on 10 September 2004 at the age of 85.

 

Bafkas, James G. was born in Greece in 1918. He enlisted in the Army on 4 June 1942 at Chicago, IL.  James was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Field Lineman (641).

Private Bafkas was promoted to private first class on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

James G. Bafkas died on 14 June 1945 at the 112th Evacuation Hospital in Obertraun, Austria of injuries sustained in an accidental fall from a hay loft.

He was survived by his wife, Bessie.

Bahm, Theodore J. was born on 13 August 1912 in Oklahoma, the son of Russian and German immigrants.  He graduated from Cherokee, Oklahoma High School.  Ted enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Cherokee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Alfalfa County, OK. 

Ted was assigned to “B” Battery. 

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Bahm was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

After the War, his family moved to a farm near Udall, Kansas. Ted was a farmer.  He died on 17 April 2005 in Arkansas City, Kansas at the age of 92. Ted is buried in Sumner Memorial Gardens in Wellington, KS.

 

Baker, Flavey E. was born in Texas on 5 November 1920.

2nd Lieutenant Baker was appointed as the Reconnaissance Officer of

“C” Battery on 5 March 1943. 

Later, 1st Lieutenant Baker was the Executive Officer of “A” Battery. 

On 13 October 1944 near Chenevieres, France, Lt. Baker was awarded the Bronze Star by Brigadier General Edward Stanley Ott, Commanding Officer of the XV Corps Artillery.  The award was for his actions on 18 August 1944, near Broue, France, when an M-10 ammunition trailer caught fire and exploded killing Private Lester F. Joyce.  Lt. Baker, along with Sgt. Herchal Bay and Private Riippa drove the Diamond T ammunition truck out of danger.

Flavey Baker died on 24 January 2001 in Texas at the age of 80.  His last known residence was in Texarkana, Bowie Co., TX.

 

Baker, George was born in North Carolina in 1922. 

He enlisted in the Army on 21 January 1943 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Harnett County, NC.

Private First Class Baker was assigned to Service Battery in January 1945 from the 2nd Replacement Depot. He was later assigned to “C” Battery.

 

Balerio, Tony M. was born in Colorado on 28 March 1918. He was assigned to “B” Battery.  Tony re-enlisted in the Army on 7 May 1946 at Lowry Field in Denver, CO.

He died on 26 October 1975 in San Francisco, California at the age of 57.

 

Ball, George O. was born in Oklahoma on 11 May 1919.  He enlisted in the Army on 22 September 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  George was assigned to “A” Battery.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Ball was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

George died on 4 August 1993 at the age of 74.  His last known address was in Yerington, Lyon Co., Nevada.

 

Bambach, Frank Anton was born in Cleveland, Ohio on 2 September 1923, the eldest son of Yugoslavian immigrants Anton and Helen Bambach.

Frank graduated from John Marshall High School in January 1942. 

He enlisted in the Army on 16 February 1943 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cuyahoga County, OH. 

Frank was assigned to HQ Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  He was promoted to technician fifth grade (corporal) in April 1945.

Frank was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

He died on 18 April 1997 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio at the age of 73.  Frank was buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Olmsted, OH.

 

Banks, John C. was born in Pennsylvania on 4 June 1918, the son of John C. and Anna Banks. His paternal grandparents were German.  John enlisted in the Army on 15 December 1942 at Harrisburg, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Lebanon County, PA.  Private Banks was assigned to “B” Battery. He was awarded the Purple Heart on 21 November 1944 for wounds received in action against the enemy on 6 July 1944 in France.

Private First Class Banks was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

John died on 21 November 2007 in Lebanon, PA at the age of 73.

 

Baran, Joseph F. was a private assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Radio Operator, Low Speed (776). Joseph was promoted to private first class on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Private First Class Baran was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

 

Barcroft, Dan C. Jr. was born in Oklahoma on 11 March 1921. He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Cherokee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK.  Dan was assigned to “C” Battery.  He was a private first class.

Dan died on 30 November 2004 at the age of 83. He is buried in the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, NV.

His last known address was in Wadsworth, Washoe Co., NV.

 

Barnes, Edward L. was born in Mississippi in 1925.

He enlisted in the Army on 28 October 1943 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.   At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Winston County, MS.

Private Barnes was assigned to “C” Battery from the 2nd Replacement Depot on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France.  His MOS was Rifleman (745).

 

Barnes, Howard F. was born in Michigan in 1911, the son of Howard F. and Winifred Barnes.  He grew up in Berrien County, MI.  Howard enlisted in the Army on 1 June 1942 at Kalamazoo, MI. He was assigned to “A” Battery.  Private First Class Barnes was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Barnes, Jack was a private who was assigned to HQ Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His SSN was (1605).

 

Barnes, Noel E. was born in Missouri on 20 February 1921, the son of Otis and Myrtle Barnes.  He was raised on a farm in McKinley Township, Douglas County, MO.  He enlisted in the Army on 3 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Douglas Co., MO. 

Noel was assigned to “C” Battery. Private First Class Barnes was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.  He was later promoted to corporal and then to sergeant on 6 September 1945.

Noel died on 20 June 1982 at the age of 61.

 

Barnett, Lester B. was born in Tennessee on 17 June 1919 the son of Mose and Fable? Barnett. He enlisted in the Army on 6 June 1941 at Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Washington County, TN.  Lester was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Automotive Mechanic (014).

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Barnett was promoted to technician fourth grade (sergeant) on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Barnett was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.  He was later promoted to staff sergeant.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to HQ Company, 58th Armored Infantry Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Philip Morris.  Lester embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the S.S. Vulcania on 3 November 1945 and arrived in New York City on 10 November. 

Lester died in May 1986 at the age of 66.  His last known address was in Johnson City, Washington Co., TN.

 

Baschleben, Richard J. was born on 15 April 1921. 

He was inducted into the Army on 27 November 1942. 

Richard was assigned to “C” Battery. He was promoted to private first class on 9 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Richard was honorably discharged from the Army on 7 December 1945.

He died on 6 January 2002 at the age of 80.   Richard is buried in the Florida National Cemetery.

 

Bauldwin, Alfred T. was born in Arkansas in 1921. He was assigned to HQ Battery.  Tommy was a cook.

Private First Class Bauldwin re-enlisted on 6 April 1946 at Little Rock, AR.

 

Bay, Herchal E. was born in Oklahoma on 16 January 1915, the son of William E. and Francena Bay.  He was raised on a farm in Payne County.  Herchal enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  He was assigned to “A” Battery. Sergeant Bay was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.

On 13 October 1944 near Chenevieres, France, Herchal was awarded the Bronze Star by Brigadier General Edward Stanley Ott, Commanding Officer of the XV Corps Artillery. Bayouth, Jim J. was born on 14 September 1918 in Oklahoma. He was of Syrian descent. Jim enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK.  His MOS was Clerk, General (055).  Jim was assigned to “B” Battery. 

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Bayouth was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria. 

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “B” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Jim embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October. There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.  

Jim died in January 1986 in Oklahoma at the age of 67. His last known address was in Tulsa, OK.

 

Bechdel, John M. was born in Pennsylvania on 10 February 1915 the son of Curtis E. Bechdel.  John’s mother died when he was a child.  He was raised in Liberty Township, Centre County, PA.  John enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Portage Co., OH.  John was assigned to “A” Battery.

Corporal Bechdel was promoted to staff sergeant on 6 September 1945.

John died on 14 February 1983 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Portage Co., OH.

 

Beckwith, Archie E. was a private first class assigned to HQ Battery.

He promoted to corporal on 20 April 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Archie was later assigned to “C” Battery.  His SSN was (606). Private First Class Beckwith was again promoted to corporal on 9 January 1945.

 

Beeson, John A. was born on 8 October 1918 in Huntington Co., Indiana, the son of Isaac and Edna Beeson.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 October 1941 at Fort Thomas, Newport, Kentucky and assigned Serial #35130660.   At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Hamilton County, Ohio. After his promotion to 2nd lieutenant, his serial number was changed to O-1179476.  John was the Motor Officer for the Service Battery.   He was assigned as the Reconnaissance Officer for “C” Battery on 5 December 1944 near Hinsbourg, Alsace, France. 

John transferred from the Battalion in March 1945.

 

Beggs, James E. was assigned to “B” Battery.  Corporal Beggs was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Bendle, Harold W. was born in Oklahoma on 28 April 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 in Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK. 

Private Bendle was assigned to HQ Battery. He was appointed corporal on 20 April 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Private First Class Bendle was transferred to the 70th Infantry Division in January 1945.

Harold died in Oklahoma on 24 Jan 1997 at the age of 78.

 

Benner, Carl C. was born in Maryland on 7 March 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ritchie County, West Virginia.  Carl was assigned to the Service Battery. Corporal Benner was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

Carl died on 6 March 1988 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Portage Co., OH at the age of 65.

 

Bennett, Morris O. was born in Oklahoma on 22 July 1919.  He enlisted in the Army on 10 February 1941 at Dallas, Texas.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cass County, TX.  Morris was assigned to “C” Battery.  His MOS was Gun Crewman, Medium Artillery (864).

Private First Class Bennett was promoted to corporal on 9 January 1945. 

Corporal Bennett was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to HQ Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Morris embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.

He died on 11 February 1997 at the age of 77.  His last known address was in Linden, Cass Co., TX.

 

Berger, Joseph was born in Hungary in 1916.

He enlisted in the Army on 1 July 1943 at Los Angeles, California.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Los Angeles County, CA.

Private Berger was assigned to HQ Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His MOS was Telephone Switchboard Operator (650).

 

Bergmeier, John H. was born in Illinois in 1919 the son of William and Bessie Bergmeier.  He enlisted in the Army on 2 June 1942 at Peoria, IL.  John was assigned to “A” Battery.

Corporal Bergmeier was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

John died in June 1981. His last known address was in Denver, Colorado.

 

Berryman, William T. was born in Tennessee in 1918.

He enlisted in the Army on 12 June 1941 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Private Berryman was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Field Lineman (641).

William was promoted to private first class on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

 

Blair, Acey S. was born on 5 April 1924 in Tennessee, the son of Albert and Sarah Blair. He grew up in Knox County. Acey enlisted in the Army on 14 April 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was assigned to Service Battery. Acey Blair died in February of 1988 at the age of 63.

 

Blair, Roy C. was born in Oklahoma in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on

6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cleveland County, OK.  Roy was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Scout (761).  Private First Class Blair was promoted to corporal on 2 September 1942 at Camp Gruber, OK.

Roy was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to HQ Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike. Bober, Eugene was born in Oklahoma in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Washington County, OK.  Eugene was assigned to “A” Battery.  His MOS was Gun Crewman, Medium Artillery (864).

Private First Class Bober was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “C” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Eugene embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. Boger, Kenneth was born in Indiana in 1923 the son of Fred and Elva Boger. He enlisted in the Army on 23 July 1942 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Daviess County, Indiana.

Private First Class Boger was assigned to HQ Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.

 

Boggs, Howard was born in Kentucky in 1922.

He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Huntington, West Virginia. Private First Class Boggs was assigned to “B” Battery.

His SSN was (531).

 

Boitnott, Walter G. was a private assigned to “C” Battery from the 2nd Replacement Depot on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France.  His SSN was (251).  He was later assigned to Service Battery.

 

Bolin, Jesse R. was born in South Carolina on 10 November 1918 the son of Jesse B. and Loula Bolin.  He enlisted in the Army on 6 June 1941 at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Orangeburg County, SC.  Jesse was assigned to HQ Battery.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Bolin was appointed technician fourth grade (sergeant) on 19 July 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Jesse was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

Bollinger, Clyde M. was a private assigned to “A” Battery.  He was promoted to private first class in March 1945.

 

Bortoluzzi, Edward B. was born in Oklahoma on 29 March 1914 the son of Italian immigrants Albert and Jennie Bortoluzzi.  His father was a coal miner.  The family was residing in Haileyville, Pittsburg Co., OK at the time of the 1930 U.S. Census.  Edward enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Enid, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  Staff Sergeant Bortoluzzi was assigned to Service Battery.

He died on 28 February 1997 at the age of 82. Edward was buried in the Cottonwood Cemetery in Watonga. OK.  His last known address was in Watonga, Blaine Co., OK.

 

Brantley, Kenneth Ray was born on 16 April 1921 in Hughes Co., Oklahoma.  He enlisted in the Army on 4 September 1942 at Oklahoma City, OK and assigned Serial #38268217.  After he was promoted to 2nd lieutenant, his serial number was changed to O-1179806. Kenneth was the Assistant Executive & Motor Officer of “A” Battery.

He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in France on 16 January 1945. The presentation was made by Brigadier General Edward Stanley Ott, Commanding General of XV Corps Artillery.    

He transferred out of the 202nd in March 1945. 

Kenneth died on 2 September 1999 in Oklahoma at the age of 78.

 

Bray, Arthur M. was born in Wise Co., Texas in 1919, the eldest son of Austin F. and Hattie Bray.  His family moved to Oklahoma when he was a child.  He enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK.  Arthur was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Cook (060).  He was promoted to private first class on 15 April 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Bray was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to HQ Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Arthur embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Brenner, Frederick H. was born in Ohio on 14 September 1911. 

He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Mahoning County, OH. 

Fred was assigned to “C” Battery.  He was promoted to private first class on 1 January 1945 near Bining, France.

Private First Class Brenner was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 21 March 1990 at the age of 78.  His last known address was in Alliance, Stark Co., Ohio.

 

Briscoe, Roy F. was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on 12 December 1914 the son of John S. and Lydia Briscoe.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Okmulgee County, OK. 

Roy was assigned to Service Battery.

He died on 17 November 1988 at the age of 73.  His last known address was in Okmulgee, OK.

 

Brown, Early B. was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private Brown was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Brown, Harold E. was born on 16 October 1917 on a farm near Johnstown, Weld Co., Colorado.  He was the son of Robert and Cora Brown.

1st Lt. Brown was appointed as Commander of “B” Battery on 5 March 1943.  Later, Captain Brown was the Battalion Intelligence Officer (S-2).

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned as commander of “A” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home. Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Harold embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October. There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.  

Harold died on 20 November 2007 in Fort Collins, CO at the age of 90.

 

Buckmaster, Cecil E. was born in Arkansas or Oklahoma in 1919, the son of John L. and Ida Buckmaster. Cecil grew up in Oklahoma.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ottawa County, OK.  Cecil was assigned to Service Battery.

 

Bull, William L. was born in Missouri in 1916. He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ottawa County, OK.  William was assigned to Service Battery.  His MOS was Truck Driver, Light (345).

Bullard, Oval was born on 11 December 1915 in Oklahoma, son of unknown father and Neely Bullard.  Oval’s father died when he was an infant.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Le Flore County, OK. 

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Bullard was assigned to Service Battery.  He died on 19 January 1982 in Humbolt, California at the age of 66.  Oval is buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA.

 

Bullock, James A. Jr. was born in Oklahoma on 11 September 1920 the son of James and Stella Bullock.  He was a member of the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 6 January 1942 at Camp Barkeley, Texas. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pontotoc County, OK.  James was a staff sergeant assigned to HQ Battery.

He died on 4 January 2007 at the age of 86.  His last known address was in Ventura, California.

 

Bumpass, Horace Maynard Jr. was born on 3 July 1915 in Texas, son of Horace and Alice Bumpass.  His father worked as a “ginner”, operating a cotton gin in Collin Co., Texas, and later, Nowata Co., Oklahoma.  Horace enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Rogers County, OK.  Horace was assigned to HQ Battery.  Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Bumpass was promoted to staff sergeant on 2 September 1944 in France.  He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

Horace died on 8 April 2002 and is buried in Mission, TX at the age of 86.

 

Burkey, Clarence E. was born in Ohio in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Columbiana, OH.  Clarence was assigned to “C” Battery.

Cahall, Noble F. was born in Maryland in 1918, son of John and Ethel Cahall.  He enlisted in the Army on 15 December 1942 at Baltimore, MD.

Carrado, Joseph L. was born in Maryland on 15 September 1918. He enlisted in the Army on 25 April 1941 at Baltimore, MD. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Baltimore County, MD.

Elm in Enid, Oklahoma at the time of the 1930 U.S. Census.  Charles was a member of the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 22 September 1940 at Enid, Garfield Co., OK.  He was assigned to “A” Battery.

He died on 21 February 2007 in Truth or Consequences, NM at the age of 89.

 

Church, Walter E. was born in Ohio on 26 July 1914 the son of Caroline Church.   He enlisted in the Army on 15 December 1942 at Akron, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskingum County, OH.  Walter was assigned to “A” Battery.  His MOS was Portable Power Generator Operator (846).

Walter was promoted to private first class in March 1945.

Clark, Lyle E. “Panama” was born in Kansas in 1913.  He was a member of the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 15 January 1942 at Camp Barkeley, Texas.   At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Garfield County, Oklahoma.  Lyle was assigned to “A” Battery.

Cline, Hugh P. was born in Virginia in March 1919.  He enlisted in the Army on 5 August 1941 at Roanoke, VA and was assigned ASN 33089495.  After he was promoted to lieutenant, his new serial number was

O-1167365.

2nd Lt. Cline was appointed Assistant Commander of HQ Battery on 5 March 1943.   Later, Captain Cline was the Commander of HQ Battery and the Battalion Communications Officer. 

After the War, he was an attorney in Norton, VA where he is currently retired.

 

Cocciardo, Tony J. was born on 24 June 1922 in Pennsylvania.  He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Fayette County, PA. 

Tony was assigned to “C” Battery.  Private First Class Cocciardo was promoted to corporal on 9 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Corporal Cocciardo was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 24 August 1996 in PA at the age of 74.

 

Cole, Roy L. was born in Arkansas in 1914.  He enlisted in the Army on 4 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ralls County, MO. 

Private Cole was assigned to HQ Battery.  He was appointed corporal on 20 April 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Corporal Cole was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.  He was promoted to technician fourth grade (sergeant) on 6 September 1945.

 

Collier, Mack L. was born in Oklahoma in 1908.  He enlisted in the Army on 10 September 1940 at Enid, OK from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Garfield County, OK.  Mack was assigned to “A” Battery. Coody, James I. was born in Texas on 28 May 1914.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.   At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  Staff Sergeant Coody was assigned to Service Battery. He was a brother of Battalion member Johnny Coody.

James later served in the United States Air Force.  

Master Sergeant James Coody died in New Mexico on 30 October 1976 at the age of 62.  He is buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM.

 

Coody, Johnny Willis was born in Oklahoma on 23 February 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  Johnny was assigned to Service Battery.  He was a brother of Battalion member James Coody.

Johnny died on 22 February 2004 in Oklahoma at the age of 81.

Crowder, Hallie E. was born in Illinois on 12 March 1914, son of Frank L. and Gertrude O. Crowder.  His father was a coal miner and the family resided in Ledford Village, Saline Co., IL.  Hallie enlisted in the Army on 27 May 1942 at East St. Louis, IL. He was assigned to “B” Battery.

Curtis, Jimroe was born in Muskogee Co., Oklahoma on 12 April 1920, the son of Lewis C. and Lydia Augerhole Curtis.  His mother was a Native American of the Cherokee tribe.  Jimroe enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Muskogee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK.  He was assigned to “C” Battery.

Jimroe died in July 1967 at the age of 47.  His last known address was in Tulsa, OK.

 

Darlington, Bruce Aquilla was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia on 31 December 1920 the son of Arvella Meadows and Lawson Darlington.

He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Clarksburg, WV and entered into active service on 26 December.

Private Darlington qualified as a marksman with the M1 Carbine and M1 Rifle in 1943.  He also attended Cooks and Bakers School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  His MOS was Truck Driver, Light (345).  Bruce was assigned to HQ Battery.  He was promoted to private first class on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Bruce left the European Theater of Operations at Marseilles, France on 11 May 1945 aboard the S.S. JOHN SULLIVAN and arrived at the Port of New York, New York on 2 June 1945.  The JOHN SULLIVAN was owned by the Shepard Steamship Company and consigned to the War Shipping Administration. His early separation from the Army was due to the death of his mother.  Bruce was honorably discharged from the Army at the Separation Center at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland with the rank of private first class on 6 August 1945.

Bruce died on 16 May 1987in Jacksonville, North Carolina at the age of 66.

He was buried on 18 May 1987 in Onslow Memorial Park in Jacksonville.

Davis, Creyton L. was born in 1921. He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  Creyton was assigned to “B” Battery.

Private First Class Davis was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Davis, Robert L. was born in Ohio in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Maricopa County, Arizona.  Robert was assigned to “C” Battery.

Private Davis was promoted to technician fifth grade (corporal) on 1 January 1945 near Bining, France.

T/5(Corporal) Davis was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Dawson, Robert W. was born in Kansas in 1921.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Tonkawa, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Kay County, OK.  Robert was assigned to the Service Battery. Staff Sergeant Dawson was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

 

De Corpo, Mike A. was born in Ohio in 1909.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cuyahoga County, OH.  Mike was assigned to HQ Battery.  

 

Della Coletta, Albert was born 5 February 1922 at Dunglen, Ohio, the son of Santo and Catherine Gustina Della Coletta.  Bert grew up in Piney Fork, OH and graduated from Smithfield High School in 1940.

Albert enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Albuquerque, New Mexico.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Jefferson County, Ohio.  

Private Della Coletta was assigned to HQ Battery.  He was appointed private first class on 19 July 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Della Coletta was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

He was promoted to the rank of technician fourth grade (sergeant) on 6 September 1945. 

After the War, Bert was a railroad conductor for Wheeling - Pittsburgh for 31 years. He was a member of the Smithfield Presbyterian Church and served as an elder; the Smithfield Lions Club; Piney Fork American Legion; Gwyn Allen Post 735, Yorkville VFW; Smithfield Senior Citizens; and the Smithfield Historical Society. 

Bert died on 24 January 2004 in Steubenville, OH at the age of 81.  He is buried at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, OH.

 

DeLuca, Lawrence J. was born in Pennsylvania in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Pittsburgh, PA.  Lawrence was assigned to “C” Battery.  Private First Class DeLuca was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Lawrence was later promoted to Corporal and then to Sergeant on 6 September 1945.

 

Deremer, Carl R. was born in Pennsylvania on 27 January 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 28 November 1942 at Altoona, PA. 

Private Deremer was assigned to “A” Battery. His MOS was Field Lineman (641).  He worked as a member of a team in laying and maintaining wires for telephone or telegraph communications systems.

Carl was transferred to the 7th Army Armored School and then the

12th Armored Division in January 1945.

He died on 15 February 2004 at the age of 82.  His last known address was in Dunnellon, Florida.

 

Dermid, John T. was born in Oklahoma on 14 January 1911, the son of Wilson and Sarah Dermid. He enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cleveland County, OK.  John was assigned to “B” Battery.

Corporal Dermid was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in Oklahoma on 14 September 1992 at the age of 81.

 

Dey, Raymond E. was born in Missouri in 1917, the son of Lillie Dey.  His father died when he was an infant.  The family moved to Oklahoma.  Raymond enlisted in the Army on 20 September 1940 at Muskogee, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK. 

Raymond was assigned to “C” Battery.

 

Di Bella, Natale R. was born in New Jersey in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 19 June 1943 at Newark, NJ.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Essex County, NJ. 

Private Di Bella was assigned to “C” Battery. His SSN was (531).

He was transferred to the 2nd Replacement Depot in January 1945.

 

Dicks, Robert E. was born in Ohio in 1920.

He enlisted in the Army on 14 October 1942 at Akron, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Trumbull County, Ohio. 

Private First Class Dicks was assigned to Service Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His MOS was Rifleman (745).

 

Di Matties, Francis J. was born on 11 April 1924.  He enlisted in the Army on 1 January 1942. Francis was assigned to Service Battery. He re-enlisted on 19 February 1946 and later served in Korea.  Francis Di Matties retired from the Army on 11 July 1961 with the rank of Sergeant First Class.  He died on 29 October 2001 at the age of 77.   Francis is buried in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.

 

Dobrancin, Michael A. was born in Pennsylvania in 1916. He enlisted in the Army on 12 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA.  Michael was assigned to Service Battery.  Private First Class Dobrancin was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 13 October 1945.

 

Dockins, J.T. was a private first class assigned to “C” Battery.

He was promoted to technician fifth grade (corporal) on 1 January 1945 near Bining, France.

T/5(Corporal) Dockins was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Donald, Alonzo M. was born on 13 January 1918 in South Carolina the son of Donald Calhoun and Charlotte McCall. He enlisted in the Army on 7 June 1941 at Fort Jackson, SC.  Alonzo was assigned to “C” Battery.  Corporal Donald was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 24 November 1962 in Oteen, Buncombe Co., North Carolina at the age of 44.

 

Donaldson, Oscar O. was born in Oklahoma in 1915.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Creek County, OK. 

Private Donaldson was assigned to Service Battery.  He was promoted to Private First Class on 8 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Doris, Francis X. was born in New York on 22 November 1916.

He enlisted in the Army on 21 May 1942 at Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Westchester County, New York.

Private First Class Doris was assigned to Service Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot. His SSN was (504).

He died in Greenwich, Connecticut on 7 December 1985, at the age of 69.  His last known address was in Stamford, CT.

 

Doshen, Charles C. was born in West Virginia in 1918. He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Clarksburg, WV. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Marion County, WV.  Charles was assigned to “B” Battery.

 

Dosier, David J. was born in Illinois on 2 December 1911 the son of Benjamin L. Dosier and Gertrude L. Short.  He enlisted in the Army on 27 May 1942 at East St. Louis, Illinois.  David was assigned to “B” Battery.

Private First Class Dosier was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in June 1979 at the age of 67.  His last known address was in Carmi, White Co., Il.

 

Downey, Eugene M. was born in Alabama in 1923.

He enlisted in the Army on 9 September 1942 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.

At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Choctaw County, Alabama.

Private First Class Downey was assigned to “C” Battery from the 2nd Replacement Depot on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France.

His SSN was (603).  He was transferred to the hospital on 25 January 1945 for a gun shot wound to the right ankle.

 

Dreyer, Carl W. was a private first class who was assigned to “B” Battery in January 1945 in France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His MOS was Rifleman (745).  He was later assigned to HQ Battery.

 

Drury, Eudell M. was born in Maine on 25 February 1925 the son of Mark W. and Alice M. Drury.  He enlisted in the Army on 12 May 1943 at Portland, Maine.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Kennebec County, ME. 

Private Drury was assigned to “B” Battery in January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot. His MOS was Rifleman (745).

Private First Class Drury was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in Maine on 30 September 1976 at the age of 51.

 

Dunlap, John D. was born in Oklahoma in 1916.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  John was assigned to the Service Battery.  Staff Sergeant Dunlap was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

 

Durrwachter, Harold G. was born in Pennsylvania in 1908.

He enlisted in the Army on 21 February 1942 at New Cumberland, PA.

At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Lycoming, Pennsylvania.

Dutchess, Marshall K. was born in Indiana on 21 August 1922 the son of Keith and Alma Dutchess.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Akron, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Stark County, OH.  Marshall was assigned to HQ Battery.

He was appointed private first class on 19 July 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Dutchess was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

He died on 8 December 1982 in Stark Co., OH at the age of 60.

 

Edwards, Newton O. “Doc” was born in Missouri on 12 February 1907 the son of Francis Oram and Elizabeth Luisa Edwards.  He was raised on a farm in Wright Co., MO.

Newton enlisted in the Army on 3 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, MO.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Douglas County, MO.  Newton was assigned to the Medical Detachment.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Edwards was promoted to corporal on 1 July 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.  

Staff Sergeant Edwards was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

He died in June 1987 at the age of 80.  His last known address was in Springfield, MO.

 

Emerson, Everett M. was born in Oklahoma on 26 November 1916 the son of Denver M. and Agnes Emerson.  He was raised on a farm in Oklahoma County, Ok. 

Everett enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 At Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma Co., OK. 

Everett was assigned to “B” Battery.

He died on 24 September 1983 at the age of 66.  His last known address was in Oklahoma.

 

England, Wylie Paul was born on 28 August 1918 in Harris Co., TX the son of Gertrude England.  His father died when he was a child.  Wylie  enlisted in the Army on 25 November 1940 at Beeville, TX.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Bee County, TX. 

Wylie was assigned to “C” Battery. 

He died in Houston, TX in November 1982 at the age of 62.

 

Eshelman, Clyde F. was born on 12 August 1908 in Stark Co., Ohio, the eldest son of Dwight and Manervia Eshelman.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Akron, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Stark County, Ohio.  Clyde was assigned to “B” Battery. 

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Eshelman was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.  He was later promoted to technician fourth grade (sergeant).

Clyde died in Louisville, OH on 30 December 1998 at the age of 90.  

He is buried in Canton, OH.

 

Eskew, James T. was born in Oklahoma on 28 February 1918 the son of Herman and Lillie E. Eskew.  James enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  James was assigned to the Service Battery.  Staff Sergeant Eskew was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

He died in February 1989 at the age of 70.  His last known address was in Watonga, OK.

 

Evans, Elden E. was born on 3 March 1916 in Oklahoma, the son of Ernest and Etta Evans.  He grew up in Garfield County, OK.  His father was a rural mail carrier.  Elden was a 1st lieutenant on the Battalion Staff. 

He died on 16 November 1989 at the age of 73.  His last known address was in Lawton, OK.

 

Evans, George B. was born in Pennsylvania in 1910.  He enlisted in the Army on 30 August 1943 at Greensburg, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Westmoreland County, PA. 

George was a private and was assigned to HQ Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  Private First Class Evans was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

 

Eyers, Orville C. was born in Wisconsin on 1 October 1921. He enlisted in the Army on 10 December 1942 at Milwaukee, WI. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Sauk County, WI.  Orville was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Eyers was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Fann, Clarence E. was born on 10 April 1919 in Illinois, the son of Richard and Rosette Fann. He enlisted in the Army on 28 May 1942 at East St. Louis, IL.  Clarence was assigned to “C” Battery. 

Corporal Fann was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 29 January 2002 (possibly in Muskogee, OK) at the age of 82.

 

Farrar, Clayton P. was a 2nd lieutenant and Assistant Executive & Motor Officer of “C” Battery.

 

Farrell, James A. was a 1st lieutenant and Assistant Executive and Motor Officer of “C” Battery. He was promoted to Executive Officer of “C” Battery on 5 December 1944 near Hinsbourg, Alsace, France. 

James was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in France on 16 January 1945. The presentation was made by Brigadier General Edward Stanley Ott, Commanding General of XV Corps Artillery.

 

Farris, Paul E. was born in Pennsylvania in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA. 

Paul was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Scout (761).

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Farris was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to the 924th Ordnance Company for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Phillip Morris.  Paul embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the USAT James J. Hill on 29 November 1945 and arrived in New York on 16 December.

 

Fascko, Frank was born in Ohio in 1913.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Portage County, OH.  Frank was assigned to “B” Battery.

 

Feinberg, Julius was a member of the Medical Detachment and assigned as a medic to “A” Battery.  Private Feinberg was promoted to Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal).

 

Ferrari, Peter A. was born in New York in 1922.

He enlisted in the Army on 18 May 1943 at New York City.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Kings County, New York.

Private First Class Ferrari was assigned to Service Battery in January 1945 from the 2nd Replacement Depot.

 

Fickus, Frank W. Jr. was born in Maryland on 5 October 1922, the son of Frank and Annie Fickus. 

He enlisted in the Army on 15 December 1942 at Baltimore, MD. Frank was assigned to “B” Battery.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Fickus was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in Baltimore, MD in January 1981 at the age of 78.

 

Fisher, Eldie L. was born in Iowa on 1 July 1916 the son of Monroe and Bertha Fisher.  He had a twin brother named Elvie.  The family moved to Kay County, Oklahoma prior to 1930.

Eldie enlisted in the Army on 19 September 1940 at Blackwell, Oklahoma.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Kay County, OK. 

Eldie was assigned to “C” Battery.

Corporal Fisher was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Eldie died in October 1984 at the age of 68.  His last known address was in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa.

 

Fisher, Stanley P. was assigned to “C” Battery.  Private First Class Fisher was promoted to corporal on 1 January 1945 near Bining, France.

Corporal Fisher was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He was later promoted to sergeant and then to staff sergeant on 6 September 1945.

 

Fitch, Dale D. was born in Oklahoma on 11 May 1919, the son of Albert and Madge Fitch. He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Ok.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Washington County, OK.  Dale was assigned to “A” Battery.  His MOS was Gun Crewman, Medium Artillery (864).

Private First Class Fitch was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “C” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Dale embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October. 

Dale died in Kansas on 29 March 1989 at the age of 69.

 

Fitzgerald, Walter B. was assigned to Service Battery.  Corporal Fitzgerald was promoted to sergeant on 6 September 1945.

 

Fitzsimmons, George R. was born in Wisconsin on 13 November 1921 the son of Eva M. Fitzsimmons.  His father died when he was a child.  George enlisted in the Army on 8 December 1942 at Milwaukee, WI.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Juneau County, WI.  George was assigned to HQ Battery. Private First Class Fitzsimmons was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in Saint Louis, Co., Minnesota on 30 November 1986 at the age

of 65.

 

Flagg, Gurdon B. was born in Ohio on 6 May 1917.  He enlisted in the Army on 3 June 1941 at Chicago, IL and assigned ASN 36034233.  After he became an officer his serial number was changed to O-1173945.

2nd Lieutenant Flagg was appointed as the Motor Officer of “B” Battery on 5 March 1943.

Later, 1st Lieutenant Flagg was assigned as the “A” Battery Reconnaissance Officer and finally the Executive Officer.

He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in France on 16 January 1945. The presentation was made by Brigadier General Edward Stanley Ott, Commanding General of XV Corps Artillery.   

Gurdon died in Illinois in March 1972 at the age of 54.

 

Flaherty, John J. was a 2nd lieutenant assigned to HQ Battery as the Assistant Communications Officer.  His hometown was Jersey City, New Jersey. John was awarded the Purple Heart on 5 January 1945 for wounds received in action against the enemy on 2 January 1945 near Bining, France. Lt. Flaherty was up near the front when he ran into a German sniper party.  He was wounded in the shoulder and chin and was pinned to the ground until relieved by friendly infantry.

John was promoted to 1st lieutenant on 8 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Florence, John A. was a 1st lieutenant assigned as Battalion Surgeon.  He joined the Battalion on 4 December 1945 near Hinsbourg, Alsace, France; replacing Captain Eugene L. Thomas who transferred to the 179th General Hospital.  

John was promoted to captain on 8 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Flynn, Eugene C. was born in Ohio on 29 October 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Portage County, OH. 

Private Flynn was assigned to “B” Battery.  His MOS was Basic (521).  He was undergoing unit training, but not yet qualified for an MOS.

In January 1945, he was transferred to the 70th Infantry Division in France.

Eugene died on 29 September 1990 in Canton, OH at the age of 67.  His last known address was in Ravenna, Portage Co., OH.

 

Folmer, Shirk B. was born in Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania on 26 May 1908, the son of Walter and Mary Folmer. He enlisted in the Army on 15 December 1942 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Lebanon County, PA. 

Private Folmer was assigned to HQ Battery.  His SSN was (606).

Shirk was promoted to private first class on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Private First Class Folmer was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in February 1981 in Lebanon Co., PA at the age of 72.

 

Foreman, Charles W. was born in Indiana in 1923.  He enlisted in the Army on 15 May 1943 at Evansville, IN.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Porter County, IN.  Charles was assigned to HQ Battery.  Staff Sergeant Foreman was promoted to technical sergeant on 6 September 1945.

 

Fowler, Francis L. was born in Illinois in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 28 May 1942 at East St. Louis, Illinois.  Francis was assigned to “C” Battery.  Private First Class Fowler was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Fox, Bernard W. was born in Indiana on 15 February 1919 the son of Edward C. and Susie E. Fox.  He enlisted in the Army on 23 June 1941 at Louisville, Kentucky.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Dearborn County, IN.  Bernard was assigned to HQ Battery.

Corporal Fox was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in October 1985 at the age of 66.  His last known address was in Aurora, Dearborn Co., OH.

 

Fox, William W. was born in Oklahoma in 1917.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Cherokee, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Alfalfa County, OK.  William was assigned to “B” Battery. 

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Fox was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Fulmer, James A. was born in South Carolina in 1917.  He enlisted in the Army on 12 June 1941 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.  James was assigned to “A” Battery.

 

Frazier, Junior C. was born in Powell Co., Kentucky on 17 January 1920, the son of Frazier and Mary Johnson.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cincinnati, OH.  Junior was assigned to “A” Battery.

Private Frazier was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  Private First Class Frazier was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in Stanton, Powell Co., KY on 9 September 1998 at the age of 78.

 

Freeman, Frederick F. was born in Virginia on 17 June 1918 the son of Fred and Armilda Freeman.  He enlisted in the Army on 12 September 1941 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Frederick was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Freeman was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 3 April 1989 at the age of 70.  His last known address was in Hendersonville, NC.

 

Fry, Loney was born in Oklahoma on 14 March 1915, the son of Samuel and Luchie? Fry.  He was a Native American of the Creek (also known as Muskogee) Tribe. 

Loney enlisted in the Army on 19 November 1942 at Tulsa, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Okmulgee County, OK.   

He died on 10 May 1992 in Okmulgee Co., OK at the age of 77.

 

Frye, Paul was born in Oklahoma in 1921. He enlisted in the Army on 15 September 1940 at Roff, OK from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of McCurtain County, OK.  Corporal Frye was assigned to HQ Battery.

 

Gale, Jake was born in Texas in 1909.

He enlisted in the Army on 16 March 1942 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Martin County, Texas.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Gale was assigned to “B” Battery in January 1945 in France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.

 

Gales, Charles G. was born in Arkansas on 18 January 1907. He enlisted in the Army on 8 July 1943 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Stoddard County, MO.  Charles was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Gales was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in February 1972 at the age of 65.  His last known address was in Dexter, Stoddard Co., MO.

 

Galloway, Fred A. was born in Oklahoma on 16 June 1919.  He enlisted in the Army on 12 December 1940 at Tulsa, Oklahoma. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Creek County, OK. 

Fred died in June 1994 at the age of 75.  His last known address was in San Jose, California.

 

Gann, Paul was a private in “A” Battery.  His SSN was (531).

He was transferred to the 44th Infantry Division in January 1945.

 

Gardner, Dwight F. was born in Oklahoma in 1913.  He was assigned to “A” Battery. His hometown was Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

On 5 January 1945, Dwight was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action against the enemy on 2 January 1945 near Bining, France. Battery “A” received two concentrations of light caliber counterbattery fire between 1500 and 1600 hours. Technician Fifth Grade Gardner and two other soldiers were slightly injured and a 2 ½ ton truck was damaged.

Dwight re-enlisted in the Army on 20 August 1946 at Tulsa, OK.

 

Gawlik, Casimir A. was born on 26 February 1920 in Illinois, the son of Polish immigrants Joseph and Elizabeth Gawlik.  He enlisted in the Army on 29 May 1942 at Chicago, IL.  He was assigned to “C” Battery. 

Private First Class Gawlik was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Casimir Gawlik died in Cook Co., IL in September 1980 at the age of 60.

 

Gazzola, Frank J. was born in New York in 1916. He enlisted in the Army on 4 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of St. Louis, MO. 

Frank was assigned to HQ Battery. His MOS was Radio Operator, Intermediate Speed (740). 

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to the 924th Ordnance Company for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Phillip Morris.  Technician Fourth Class (Sergeant) Gazzola embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the USAT James J. Hill on 29 November 1945 and arrived in New York on 16 December.

 

Glassick, Martin L. was born in Virginia in 1918, the eldest son of Royland and Gladys Glassick.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 May 1941 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of York County, PA.  Martin was assigned to “B” Battery.

 

Gombash, Dallas was born in Goff, Butler Co., Pennsylvania on 11 May 1916. He was the son of Hungarian immigrants Sándor (Alex) Gombás and Eszter Tóth.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Akron, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Trumball County, OH.  Dallas was assigned to Service Battery.  He died in Tuscon, Pima Co., Arizona.

 

Gourno, John Louis was born on 23 December 1920 in Michigan, the son of Lloyd and Lurena Gourno.  He enlisted in the Army on 27 January 1941 at Fort Hayes in Columbus, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Lucas County, OH.  John was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Writer, Military Subjects (274).

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to HQ Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Sergeant Gourno embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Graham, Joe J. was born in Texas in 1912.

He enlisted in the Army on 11 May 1942 at Abilene, Texas. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Mitchell County, Texas.

Private First Class Graham was assigned to “B” Battery in January 1945 in France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His MOS was Rifleman (745).

 

Grammer, Lee D. was born in 1915. He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Rogers County, OK.  Lee was assigned to Service Battery.  His MOS was Cook (060).

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to Service Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Private First Class Grammer embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October. 

 

Grant, Delmer W. was assigned to “C” Battery.  On the night of 25-26 September 1944, near Fraimbois, France, he suffered head and side injuries when he slipped and was hit by the recoil of a howitzer.

 

Gravitt, Roy W. was born in Georgia in 1916.

He enlisted in the Army on 16 January 1941 at Fort McPherson, Georgia.

Private First Class Gravitt was assigned to “B” Battery in January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His SSN was (504).

 

Gray, L.T. was born in South Carolina in 1923.

He enlisted in the Army on 17 March 1943 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oconee County, SC.

Private Gray was assigned to “B” Battery in January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His MOS was Rifleman (745).

 

Greenbaum, David A. was a 1st lieutenant who joined the 202nd near Guisberg, France on 5 March 1945 and was assigned to “C” Battery as the Reconnaissance Officer.

 

Greenberg, Sheldon K. was born on 31 August 1920 in Rhode Island, the son of Samuel and Clara Greenberg.  He enlisted in the Army on 24 February 1941 at Providence, RI.  2nd Lieutenant Greenberg joined the 202nd on 26 November 1944 near Mommenheim, France.  He was assigned to “A” Battery as the Assistant Executive Officer. 

On 14 January 1945, while the Battalion was in combat near Gros-Réderching, France; Lt. Greenberg, Lt. Walter C. Pitt and T/3 Loren Kirby departed for the 7th Army Liaison Pilot’s and Air Observer’s Rest Camp at Grenoble, France.

Sheldon died on 30 March 1997 in New Jersey at the age of 76.

 

Greer, Billie J. was born in Oklahoma in 1921 the son of Thomas and Ethel Greer.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Okmulgee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK.  Billie was assigned to “C” Battery.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Greer was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Greiner, Eugene C. was born in Ohio on 17 December 1921.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Akron, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskingum County, OH.  Eugene was assigned to “B” Battery.

His MOS was Gun Crewman, Medium Artillery (864).

Corporal Greiner was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Griffin, Hubert L. was born in Norfolk, Virginia on 29 January 1921 the son of Alicia Goodwin and Rossie S. Griffin.

He enlisted in the Army on 1 December 1943 at Richmond, Virginia.

Private Griffin was assigned to HQ Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His SSN was (1605).

Hubert died on 2 March 2003 at the age of 82. His last known address was in Jacksonville, Florida.

 

Griffith, Paul W. was born in Pennsylvania in 1917 the son of Joseph W. and Elizabeth D. Griffith.  He was raised in Westmoreland Co., PA.

Paul enlisted in the Army on 31 October 1942 at Greensburg, PA. 

He was assigned to HQ Battery. Paul was appointed private first class on 19 July 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Griffith was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Griggs, William H. was a technician fifth grade who was assigned to

“B” Battery.  His MOS was Truck Driver, Light (345). 

In January 1945, he was transferred to the 70th Infantry Division in France.

 

Grogg, Leonard L. was born in West Virginia on 19 December 1914.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Clarksburg, WV. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Lewis County, WV.  Leonard was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Grogg was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

After the War, he worked for Louie Glass Co. which produced crystal glassware in Weston, WV and retired after 31 ½ years. Leonard died on

1 March 2007 in Weston, WV at the age of 92.

 

Grote, Marion B. was born on 5 September 1914 in Oklahoma the son of George and Jessie Grote.  He was a member of the National Guard when his unit was inducted into Federal service on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, OK. His ASN was 20833273.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  When he was promoted to Warrant Officer, Junior Grade his serial number was changed to W-2119333. 

Marion was appointed Assistant Battalion S-4 (Supply Officer) on 5 March 1943 and assigned to Service Battery.

He was later promoted to chief warrant officer.

Marion died on 14 December 1993 in Utah at the age of 79.

 

Groves, Ira W. was born in Illinois in 1912, the son of coal miner John Groves and his wife Minnie.  He enlisted in the Army on 3 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Douglas County, MO.  Ira was assigned to “C” Battery.

Private First Class Groves was promoted to corporal on 1 January 1945 near Bining, France.

Corporal Groves was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Grubb, Harvey J. was born in Ohio in 1916, the son of Burt and Rachel Grubb.  He enlisted in the Army on 14 October 1941 at Cleveland, OH.     At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Portage County, OH. 

Harvey was assigned to “A” Battery.  Private First Class Grubb was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Gruby, Carlton J. Jr. was born in New York on 21 June 1917, the son of Cora Fish and Carlton Gruby.  He enlisted in the Army on 27 March 1943 at Utica, NY.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oneida County, NY.  Corporal Gruby was assigned to HQ Battery.  He died in July 1981 in New York.

 

Guiles, Howard D. was born in Missouri on 15 May 1919. He grew up in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.

Howard enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Muskogee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Wagoner County, OK. 

Howard was assigned to “C” Battery.  On the morning of 3 January 1945, near the town of Bining in Lorraine, France, “C” Battery received a 10-round concentration of heavy caliber enemy artillery fire.  Corporal Guiles and Pfc. William J. Majnaric were injured by fragments.  They were hospitalized.

Howard died on 4 May 1985 in Oklahoma at the age of 65.

 

Haggerty, James William was born in Rochester, Pennsylvania on

3 November 1915 the son of Charles O. Haggerty and Anna C. Whalen. 

He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA. 

James was assigned to HQ Battery.  Private First Class Haggerty was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.  He was later promoted to technician fifth grade (corporal).

James died on 12 November 1971 in Pittsburgh, PA at the age of 56.

 

Hale, Oran E. was a private assigned to HQ Battery.

His MOS was Heavy Machine Gunner (605).  He was transferred to Service Battery on 30 July 1943. 

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to the 924th Ordnance Company for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Phillip Morris.  Private First Class Hale embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the USAT James J. Hill on 29 November 1945 and arrived in New York on 16 December.

 

Halferty, Donal R. was born in Indiana on 31 October 1918 the son of Dalton and Reba Halferty.  He enlisted in the Army on 28 June 1941 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of LaGrange County, IN.  Donal was assigned to “B” Battery.  Corporal Halferty was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 25 September 1991 in Kinderhook, Michigan at the age of 72.

 

Hamilton, Thomas C. was born in Oklahoma in September 1919 the son of Perry and Onice Hamilton.  He enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK.  Thomas was assigned to “C” Battery.  His MOS was Supply Clerk (835).

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to Service Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Hamilton embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on

18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard. 

 

Hammer, Edward Victor was born in Ohio on 24 June 1922, the son of William and Mary Hammer.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Akron, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Stark County, OH.  Edward was assigned to “C” Battery. 

Corporal Hammer was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 6 July 2002 in Massillon, OH at the age of 80.

 

Hammill, William T. was assigned to HQ Battery.  Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Hammill was promoted to staff sergeant on 6 September 1945.

 

Hansen, Walter E. G. Was born in Denmark in 1916.  He enlisted in the Army on 5 November 1943 at Fort Myer, Virginia. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of the District of Columbia.  Private Hansen was assigned to the Medical Detachment.

 

Hanson, Clarence C. was assigned to “A” Battery. Pfc. Hanson was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Hardin, Simon D. “Doc” was born in Oklahoma on 3 April 1911, the son of Joseph and Roxie Hardin.  He enlisted in the Army on 15 September 1940 at Roff, OK from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pontotoc County, OK.  Simon was assigned to HQ Battery.

On 5 January 1945, Simon was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action against the enemy on 2 January 1945 near Bining, France. Around 1700 hours, four American P-51 Mustangs left a formation of twelve planes and dropped three bombs and strafed in the vicinity of the Command Post.  One bomb landed within 50 yards of the HQ Battery kitchen and slightly injured Private First Class Hardin who was the Battery dishwasher.

Simon died in September 1981 at the age of 70. 

 

 

Harman, William S. was born in West Virginia in 1919.  He enlisted in the Army on 10 October 1941 at Huntington, West Virginia.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Hancock County, WV. 

William was assigned to HQ Battery.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Harman was promoted to staff sergeant on 15 April 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

William was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

 

Harp, Paul G. was born in Illinois in 1911.  He enlisted in the Army on 28 May 1942 at East St. Louis, Illinois.  Paul was assigned to “C” Battery.

 

Harper, Irl W. was born in Oklahoma on 15 November 1916.  At the time of the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, he was living at the Masonic Home for Orphans in Guthrie, OK.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Muskogee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK.  Staff Sergeant Harper was assigned to “C” Battery.

He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Irl died on 23 November 1993 in Oklahoma at the age of 77.

 

Hartman, Raymond F. was born in Missouri in 1914.  Raymond was assigned to “B” Battery.  First Sergeant Hartman was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria. He re-enlisted on 20 November 1945 at Oklahoma City, OK with the rank of Master Sergeant.

 

Hathaway, Allen L. was born in Oklahoma on 6 February 1920, the son of Alvin L. and Beulah H. Hathaway.

He was a liaison pilot assigned to HQ Battery of the 202nd Field Artillery Battalion.  Allen was killed near Harbouey, France, along with 2nd Lieutenant George Schleier, on the afternoon of 18 November 1944 when the L-4 Grasshopper observation and liaison aircraft he was flying was hit by friendly artillery fire.

Hayworth, Asa C. was born in Oklahoma in 1908.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ottawa County, OK.  Asa was assigned to “A” Battery.  His MOS was Gun Crewman, Medium Artillery (864).

Asa was promoted to private first class in March 1945.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “C” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Asa embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard. 

 

Hedler, Edward A.  was a private who was assigned to “B” Battery in January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.

His MOS was Rifleman (745).

Private First Class Hedler was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Herr, Orris Elton was born in Creston, Iowa on 6 September 1921, the son of Harry L. Herr and Elizabeth M. Smith.

He was inducted into the Army on 3 September 1942 and completed basic training at the Field Artillery Replacement Center at Camp Roberts, San Miguel, California.

1st Lt. Herr joined the 202nd in France on 26 October 1944 and was assigned to HQ Battery as a liaison pilot.

He was killed on 4 December 1944, along with 1st Lieutenant John W. White, when the L-4 Grasshopper observation and liaison aircraft they were flying was hit by friendly artillery fire.

Hetrick, Clifford Edmond was born on a farm in Kinross, Michigan on 13 May 1917. He was the son of Warren Hetrick.  Clifford’s mother died when he was a child.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 March 1941 at Escanaba, MI. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Chippewa County, MI.  He was assigned to “B” Battery.  His SSN was (531).

Private First Class Hetrick was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Clifford died on 2 November 1995 in Sault Ste Marie, MI at the age of 78.

 

Hiatt, Carl A. was born in Oklahoma on 27 September 1912.  He enlisted in the Army on 9 January 1942 at Camp Barkeley, Texas. Carl had entered the Army earlier through Selective Service and was within 3 months of discharge.  His MOS was Quartermaster Supply Technician (821). Carl was assigned to “B” Battery.

Private First Class Hiatt was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria. He was later promoted to staff sergeant.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “B” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Staff Sergeant Hiatt embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard. 

Carl died on 1 April 1968 in Trinity, California at the age of 55.

 

Himes, Charles H. was born in Oklahoma in 1921 the son of Grover and Mary Himes.  The family was residing in Enid, Garfield Co., OK at the time of the 1930 U.S. Census.  Charles enlisted in the Army on 11 October 1941 at Camp Barkeley, Texas from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Garfield County, OK.  Charles was assigned to “A” Battery.

 

Hinkle, Leland was born in Oklahoma on 23 December 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  Leland was assigned to Service Battery. Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Hinkle was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

After the War, Leland worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Watonga, OK until his retirement.

He died on 23 December 1993 at the age of 70.  Leland is buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Watonga. 

 

Hoefke, Oscar R. was born in Wisconsin on 20 July 1915.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Milwaukee, WI. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of La Crosse County, WI.

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Hoefke was assigned to HQ Battery.  He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

Oscar died on 23 September 1972 in La Crosse, WI at the age of 57.

 

Hofmeister, John C. was born in Pennsylvania on 20 March 1922 the son of George and Emma Hofmeister.  He enlisted in the Army on 11 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.  John was assigned to “C” Battery. 

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Hofmeister was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

John was promoted to Sergeant on 6 September 1945.

He died on 4 March 2002 at the age of 86.  His last known address was in West Mifflin, Allegheny County, PA. 

 

Holland, Eugene F. Jr. was born in Pennsylvania in 1926.  Private First Class Holland re-enlisted in the Army on 24 October 1945 at Bellefonte, PA.

 

Hollis, John W. was born in Oklahoma on 16 August 1917.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 September 1940 at Roff, Oklahoma.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pontotoc County, OK.  (Private or Sergeant) Hollis was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Radio Operator, Medium Speed (740).

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “C” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  John embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Holmes, Jack M. was born in West Virginia in 1914.  He enlisted in the Army on 15 December 1942 at Baltimore, Maryland.  Jack was previously an enlisted man in the Regular Army and had been discharged more than 3 months.  He was assigned to Service Battery. 

Sergeant Holmes was promoted to staff sergeant on 6 September 1945.

 

Hontula, John E. was born 9 February 1918 in Girard, Ohio.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Trumbull County, OH.  John was assigned to HQ Battery. Technical Sergeant Hontula was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

John died on 16 June 1998 in Youngstown, OH at the age of 80.

 

Houseman, William C. was born in Pennsylvania in 1919.

Private Houseman was assigned to “C” Battery.  He was promoted to private first class on 1 January 1945 near Bining, France.

After the War, William joined the National Guard. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 5 April 1946 at Philadelphia, PA with the rank of master sergeant.

 

Hovorka, Anton John was born in Nebraska in 1926, the son of Czechoslovakian immigrant Anton Hovorka and his wife Valasta.  He enlisted in the Army on 28 July 1944 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Colfax County, NE. 

Anton was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Hovorka was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Howard, Coy E. was born in Oklahoma in 1916. He enlisted in the Army on 6 January 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, Coy was a resident of Alfalfa, County, OK.

 

Huggins, Melvin Franklin Jr. was born in Mingo Junction, Ohio on

1 September 1916, the son of the Melvin F. Huggins and Rachael Shook.  He enlisted in the Army on 21 June 1941 at Cleveland, OH. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Jefferson County, OH.  He was assigned to “B” Battery. 

After the War, Melvin worked for General Motors Corporation of Ypsilanti, Michigan until his retirement.  He was a member of the Toronto, Ohio V.F.W. Post 6906 and the Toronto Order of Eagles Aerie 1276. 

Melvin died on 1 October 2008 in Steubenville, OH at the age of 92.

 

Hutchinson, Clarence W. was born in North Dakota in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 5 December 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of King County, Washington. 

Private Hutchinson was assigned to “B” Battery.  His SSN was (531).

Private First Class Hutchinson was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Ilbrink, George I. was born on 18 July 1914 in Michigan, the son of John and Mary Ilbrink.  George enlisted in the Army on 2 June 1942 at Kalamazoo, MI.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Kent County, MI.  He was assigned to “C” Battery. Private Ilbrink was promoted to private first class on 9 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

After the War, George worked as a lithographer.

He died on 6 June 1992 in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 77.  His last known address was in Palmdale, CA.

 

Ing, Raymond was born in Illinois in 1909 the son of Anna D. and Willie Sanford Ing. He grew up in Thompsonville Village, Franklin Co., IL.  Raymond moved to Oklahoma City prior to 1930. He worked as a mechanic and driver.  Raymond enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.   At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK.

Private Ing’s MOS was Full Track Driver (735).  He operated The M5

13-Ton High Speed Tractors that were used to tow the howitzers.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “C” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Raymond embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. Ingram, William A. was born in Oklahoma on 10 October 1914.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 January 1942 at Camp Barkeley, Texas.  William was a Private in the National Guard at the time of his enlistment and was residing in Murray County, OK.  He was assigned to HQ Battery.  Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Ingram was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 24 February 2007 at the age of 93.  His last known address was in Choctaw, OK.

 

Jackson, Robert H. was born in Kentucky in 1914 the son of Thomas H. and Birchie Jackson.  His family moved to Oklahoma prior to 1920.  

Robert enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK. 

Robert was assigned to “B” Battery.  His MOS was Gun Crewman,

Medium Artillery (864).

Jennison, Francis Milburn was born in Oklahoma on 31 October 1913.  He enlisted in the Army on 24 December 1941 at Camp Barkeley, Texas from the National Guard. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Major County, OK.  Francis was assigned to HQ Battery.

Master Sergeant Jennison was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

He later served in the United States Air Force in Korea and Vietnam.

Francis died on 24 December 1978 in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 65.  He was buried in Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA on 29 December 1978.

 

Johanson, Martin was born in Sweden in 1907.  He enlisted in the Army on 2 June 1942 at Peoria, Illinois.  Martin was assigned to “C” Battery.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Johanson was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Johns, Elmore L. was born in Oklahoma in 1921, the son of William and Edna Johns.  He enlisted in the Army on 15 September 1940 at Roff, OK from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pontotoc, OK.  Private Johns was assigned to HQ Battery. 

S/Sgt. Johns was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 10 March 1973 in Los Angeles, CA.

 

Johnson, Carmel Wallace was born in Oklahoma on 8 December 1918. He enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Le Flore County, OK.

Carmel was assigned to “B” Battery.  His MOS was Radio Repairman (648).

Johnston, Denton Richard Jr. was born in Oklahoma on 6 June 1924. He enlisted in the Army on 20 April 1943 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Johnson County, KS. 

Denton was assigned to “C” Battery. Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Johnston was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Denton died in October 1985 in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 61.

 

Joines, Eldred G. was born in Iowa on 3 October 1913, the son of Glenn and Myrtle Joines.

He was assigned to “B” Battery.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Joines was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Eldred died on 3 June 1994 in Iowa at the age of 80.

 

Jones, Alfred P. was born in Oklahoma in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Lincoln County, OK.  Alfred was assigned to “A” Battery.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Jones was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.  Alfred was later promoted to technician fourth grade (sergeant).

Asher was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

Later, Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Jones was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

He died in Akron on 12 February 1986 at the age of 72.

 

Jones, Elmer was born in Oklahoma in 1919. He was a Native American.  Elmer enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Okfuskee County, OK.  Elmer was assigned to Service Battery.  His MOS was Truck Driver,

Light (345).

Jones, Herman D. was born in Oklahoma on 5 October 1920 the son of Bert A. and Ida L. Jones. Herman’s mother died when he was a child.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Cherokee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Alfalfa County, OK.  Private First Class Jones was assigned to “B” Battery.  Sergeant Jones was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 8 June 1994 at the age of 73.  His last known address was in Enid, Oklahoma.

 

Jones, Merle was born in Ochelata, Washington Co., Oklahoma on 31 July 1917 the son of James L. Jones and Zena M. Evans.  His parents died when he was a teenager.

He was drafted and entered the Army on 23 September 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  Merle reported to the Field Artillery Replacement Training Center at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  He was assigned to Battery “A”, 32nd Battalion, 8th Field Artillery Training Regiment.  He received his basic training at Fort Sill and instruction as a telephone lineman at Camp Barkeley, Texas.  Merle qualified as a marksman with the U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M1.  He was assigned to HQ Battery.  Corporal Jones was promoted to Staff Sergeant on 2 September 1942 at Camp Gruber, OK.  He was promoted to Technical Sergeant on 20 April 1943, also at Camp Gruber.  Merle was promoted to First Sergeant on 18 September 1944 in France.

His MOS ratings were Engineer Supply Technician (583) and Administrative NCO (502).

After the War, Merle went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company in Texas and Oklahoma until his retirement in 1980.  He lives in Arizona.

Jorgenson was a lieutenant and Forward Observer who accidentally shot himself through the foot on 9 July 1944 in Normandy, France.  He was left with the 28th Division medics.

 

Joyce, Lester F. was born in St. Marys, Auglaize Co., Ohio on 8 December 1921, the son of Mary R. Hardin and Harry W. Joyce.  He enlisted in the Army on 30 November 1942 at Toledo, Ohio.  Private Joyce was assigned to “A” Battery.

On 18 August 1944, near Broue, France, an M-10 ammunition trailer pulled by a 4-ton Diamond T truck caught fire and exploded.  Private Joyce, riding in the back of the truck, was struck in the head by a shell fragment, killing him almost instantly.

Kackley, Harley O. was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia on 28 January 1917, the son of Charles Kackley and Syneia Orndorff.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Clarksburg, WV. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Berkeley County, WV. 

Private Kackley was assigned to “A” Battery.  He was promoted to private first class in March 1945.  Private First Class Kackley was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Harley died in West Virginia on 23 June 1973 at the age of 56.

 

Karger, Samuel was born in Poland on 1 July 1919.  He enlisted in the Army on 10 April 1941 at Jamaica, New York.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Kings, New York City.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Karger was assigned to “A” Battery, and later, Service Battery.  His MOS was Postal Clerk (056).

Samuel died on 24 May 2003 at the age of 83.  His last known address was in Houston, Texas.

 

Karwoski, James J. was born in Maryland on 10 October 1920. He enlisted in the Army on 15 December 1942 at Baltimore, MD.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Baltimore County, MD.  James was assigned to “A” Battery.

Private Karwoski was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  James was later promoted to corporal. He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Corporal Karwoski was promoted to sergeant on 6 September 1945.

He died in March 1984 at the age of 63.  His last known address was in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

 

Kawecki, John J. was born in Pennsylvania on 26 June 1915. He enlisted in the Army on 16 June 1941 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.  John was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Cook (060). 

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Kawecki was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to HQ Company, 58th Armored Infantry Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Philip Morris.  John embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the S.S. Vulcania on 3 November 1945 and arrived in New York City on 10 November. 

He died on 17 May 2005 at the age of 89.  His last known address was in Sandy Lake, Mercer Co., PA.

 

Keaton, Frank A. was born in Arizona on 4 September 1924 the son of Robert N. and Bertha E. Keaton. At the time of the 1930 U.S. Census, the family was living on a farm in the San Rafael Valley in Santa Cruz County, Arizona.

Frank enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Phoenix, Arizona.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pima County, Arizona.

Private Keaton was assigned to “C” Battery.  His SSN was (504).

He was transferred to the 2nd Replacement Depot in January 1945.

Frank died on 16 March 1998 at the age of 73.  His last known address was in Molalla, Oregon.

 

Kelley, Erving A. Jr. was born in Oklahoma in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of McIntosh County, OK.  Erving was assigned to Service Battery.  His MOS was Truck Driver, Light (345).

Private Kelley and Private Norman H. Moore were injured on 10 August 1944 when an ammunition truck and trailer in which they were riding missed a narrow bridge north of Fatines, France and left the road.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to Service Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Erving embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over 50 other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Kelly, Charles B. was born in Ohio in 1914.  He enlisted in the Army on 24 June 1941 at Fort Thomas near Newport, Kentucky (a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio).  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Montgomery Co., Ohio.

Private Kelly was assigned to “B” Battery.  His SSN was (603).  He was transferred to the 71st Replacement Battalion in January 1945.

 

Kelso, Thilbert was born in Oklahoma on 26 May 1918 the son of Frank and Mable Kelso.  He enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK.  Thilbert was assigned to “C” Battery.  His MOS was Truck Driver, Light (345).

King, John B. was a 2nd lieutenant who was appointed as “A” Battery Executive Officer on 5 March 1943.

Later, 1st Lieutenant King was the Service Battery Ammunition Officer.

 

Kirby, Loren was assigned to HQ Battery.

On 14 January 1945, while the Battalion was in combat near Gros-Réderching, France; Lt. Sheldon Greenberg, Lt. Walter C. Pitt and T/3 Loren Kirby departed for the 7th Army Liaison Pilot’s and Air Observer’s Rest Camp at Grenoble, France.

Technician Third Grade (Staff Sergeant) Kirby was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Kirby, Melvin L. was a 2nd lieutenant who joined the Battalion as a replacement for one of the Liaison Pilots who were killed.

 

Knoche, Clarence W. was born in Illinois on 31 August 1913 the son of Henry G. and Emma L. Knoche.  His family moved back to Missouri when he was an infant.  They resided in Lafayette and Jackson counties.  He enlisted in the Army on 3 August 1942 At Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Lafayette County, MO. 

Clarence was assigned to “A” Battery.

He died in May 1978 at the age of 64.  His last known address was in Abilene, Dickinson Co., KS.

 

Komora, Joseph H. was born in Cleveland, Ohio on 25 July 1919. He was the son of John and Ann Komora who had emigrated from Belgrade, Serbia.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cuyahoga County, OH.

Private Komora was assigned to “B” Battery.  His SSN was (641).

In January 1945, he was transferred to the 45th Infantry Division in France.

Joseph died in Cleveland on 15 May 1992 at the age of 72.

 

Kopplin, Romaine Herman was born 27 February 1916 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin the son of Amalia T. Sipple and Carl J. Kopplin. He graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1934.  Romaine was assigned to “C” Battery.  He died on 14 February 1997 in Lee Co., FL at the age of 80.

 

Krahn, Richard G. was born on 20 April 1917 in Wisconsin.  He enlisted in the Army on 28 April 1941 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin and assigned ASN 36209244.  After he became an officer, his serial number was changed to

O-1172126.  2nd Lt. Krahn was appointed as Battalion Assistant S-2 (Intelligence Officer) on 5 March 1943.  He assumed duties as the Battalion Liaison Officer on 24 December 1944 near Schmittviller, Lorraine, France.

Later, 1st Lt. Krahn was the HQ Battery Motor Officer. 

Richard died on 27 July 1998 in Mesa, Arizona at the age of 81.

 

Krantosky, John M. was born in Pennsylvania on 19 May 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 June 1941 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.

At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.  John was assigned to “B” Battery.  Corporal Krantosky was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in Pennsylvania in April 1969 at the age of 50.

 

Krause, Harry M. was born in Pennsylvania in 1908. He was a Private in the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 12 December 1942 at Pittsburgh, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.  Harry was assigned to HQ Battery. Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Krause was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Krause, Marvin W. was a 2nd lieutenant and Assistant Executive & Motor Officer of “B” Battery.  He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in France on 16 January 1945. The presentation was made by Brigadier General Edward Stanley Ott, Commanding General of XV Corps Artillery. 

 

Kreckel, Lyle E. was born in Pennsylvania on 27 July 1916 the son of Fred and Barbara Kreckel.  He grew up in Johnsonburg, PA.  Lyle enlisted in the Army on 10 June 1941 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Johnsonburg, Elk County, PA. 

His MOS was Chief of Section, Medium Artillery (864).  At a supervisory level, Lyle was responsible for control, coordination and tactical employment of medium artillery pieces and crew members.

He was assigned to “B” Battery.  Sergeant Kreckel was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria. 

He also received a Bronze Star. 

At the conclusion of the War, Lyle returned to the United States on 19 September 1945.  He was discharged from the Army with the rank of Sergeant on 25 September 1945 at the Indiantown Gap Military Reservation Separation Center in Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania. The Gap was an important Army training camp during World War II and served as a staging area for the New York Port of Embarkation. Seven U.S. Army divisions were given final training at the Gap, prior to being shipped overseas.

Lyle died on 21 October 1988 at the age of 72.  His last known address was in Johnsonburg, Elk Co., PA.

 

Kregosky, Anthony J. was born 26 August 1922 in PA.  He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Fayette County, PA.  Anthony was assigned to “C” Battery.  Private First Class Kregosky was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 24 April 1999 in Lorain, OH at the age of 76.

 

Krol, Stanley was born in Ohio in 1916.  He enlisted in the Army on 21 June 1941 at Cleveland, Ohio. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Jefferson County, OH.  His MOS was Heavy Machine Gunner (605).  Stanley was assigned to “B” Battery.

Private First Class Krol was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “A” Company, 58th Armored Infantry Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Philip Morris.  Stanley embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the S.S. Vulcania on 3 November 1945 and arrived in New York City on 10 November. 

 

Kronberg, John A. was born in New Jersey in 1925, the eldest son of Swedish immigrants John and Matilda Kronberg.  He enlisted in the Army on 1 July 1943 at Newark, NJ.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Essex County, NJ.  John was assigned to “A” Battery. 

 

Kureth, Charles L. was born in Indiana on 24 January 1914, the son of Charles Kureth and Mabel Raush.  He grew up in Wayne Co., Michigan. 

1st Lt. Kureth joined the Duece-O-Duece on 11 January 1945 in France as a

Liaison Pilot assigned to Battalion Headquarters. 

Charles died in Cass Co., Minnesota on 26 September 1978 at the age of 64.

 

Lach, Mike J. was born in Pennsylvania in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 June 1941 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.

Private Lach was assigned to “C” Battery.  He was promoted to private first class on 9 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

 

Lack, Joseph S. Jr. was born on 6 December 1919 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Czechoslovakian immigrants Joseph and Sophie Lack.  Joseph enlisted in the Army on 11 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA. 

He was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Lack was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 30 June 1991 in Lansing, Michigan at the age of 71.

 

Laderman, Harry was born in Maryland on 3 July 1915 the son of Russian immigrants Hyman and Ida Laderman.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 June 1941 at Baltimore, Maryland.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Baltimore City.  Harry was assigned to “C” Battery.

Hr died in April 1969 at the age of 53.

 

La Mascus, James Albert was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on 9 April 1922 the son of Everett L. and Marinda E. La Mascus.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Muskogee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK.  Staff Sergeant La Mascus was assigned to “C” Battery.

He died in San Joaquin, California on 14 May 1959 at the age of 37.  James was buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA.

 

Langford, Herman C. was born in 1918. He enlisted in the Army on

19 February 1941.  Herman was assigned to “C” Battery.  Sergeant Langford was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Lantto, Toivo Alfred was born in Michigan on 15 June 1919, the son of Swedish immigrant Eli Lantto and wife Impie.  He enlisted in the Army on 6 March 1941 at Escanaba, MI.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Houghton County, MI.  Toivo was assigned to “A” Battery.

His MOS was Gun Crewman, Medium Artillery (864).

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “C” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Corporal Lantto embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.

Toivo died on 25 April 1973 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 53.  He is buried in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

 

Lapinski, Chester A. was born in Missouri on 24 August 1915.  He enlisted in the Army on 4 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of St. Louis, MO.

Private First Class Lapinski died on 26 August 1985 at the age of 70.  He was buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO on 29 August 1985.

 

Larson, Harold J. was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on 24 January 1912 the son of Swedish immigrant John P. Larson.  Harold’s mother died when he was a child.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Mahoning County, OH.  Harold was assigned to HQ Battery.  Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Larson was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

He was later promoted to technician third grade (staff sergeant) and then to technical sergeant on 6 September 1945.

Harold died in Youngstown, OH on 7 January 2001 at the age of 88.  He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Youngstown.

 

Lauten, Fred C. was born in Missouri in 1917.  He enlisted in the Army on 3 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of St. Louis County, MO.  Fred was assigned to HQ Battery.  Staff Sergeant Lauten was promoted to technical sergeant on 18 September 1944 in France.

Fred was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Lauterburg, Fredrick G. was born 1 April 1917, the son of William & Marie Lauterburg.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Chicago, IL.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cook County, IL.  Fredrick was assigned to “C” Battery. Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Lauterburg was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 5 May 2003 in Cook Co., Illinois.

 

Lawless, Warren R. was born in Oklahoma on 21 August 1920 (or 1921) the son of John C. Lawless and Rushia E. Cooper.  He was in the National Guard when his unit was inducted into Federal service on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, OK. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  Warren was assigned to Service Battery.

Corporal Lawless was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

Warren died in July 1986.  His last known address was in El Reno, OK.

 

Lawry, Fred S. Jr. was assigned to Service Battery.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Lawry was promoted to technician fourth grade (sergeant) on 8 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Lee, Marion P. was assigned to the Medical Detachment. Technician Third Grade (Staff Sergeant) Lee was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

 

Letusick, John W. Jr. was born in Ohio on 9 February 1914, the son of Polish immigrants John and Mary Letisick.  His father was a coalminer and farmer in Jefferson Co., OH.  John enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Akron, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Jefferson County, OH.  He was assigned to “A” Battery. 

Private First Class Letusick was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

John died on 22 May 2006 in Martins Ferry, OH.

 

Lewis, Olen D. was born in Oklahoma on 29 April 1915. 

He was a member of the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 15 September 1940 at Roff, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pontotoc Co., OK.

Private Lewis was assigned to HQ Battery.  His SSN was (595).

He was promoted to private first class on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.  Olen was promoted to technician fifth grade (corporal) in March 1945.

He died in March 1986 at the age of 70.  His last known address was in Ada, Pontotoc Co., OK.

 

Lewis, Roy A. was born in 1921.  He was a member of the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 15 September 1940 at Ardmore Army Airfield, Oklahoma.  Roy was assigned to HQ Battery.

Corporal Lewis was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

 

Lewis, Tom was born in Iowa on 8 March 1894, the son of William and Ida Lewis.  His father was a blacksmith.  In June of 1900 the family was residing in Appanoose Co., Iowa. They moved to Oklahoma about 1905 and settled in Tryon, Lincoln County. 

He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in Battery “E” – Cherokee, 189th Field Artillery, Oklahoma National Guard on 22 February 1925.  Tom managed the Max Theater in Cherokee in the 1930’s. 

The 2nd Battalion, 189th Field Artillery was inducted into Federal service at Hobart, OK on 16 September 1940.  It was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 202nd Field Artillery on 11 February 1942. 

Lt. Colonel Tom Lewis assumed command of the Battalion on 1 March 1943, when it was reorganized and redesignated as the 202nd Field Artillery Battalion.

The 202nd was inactivated on 2 December 1945 at Camp Shanks, New York.  Tom was discharged from the Army on 6 April 1946 at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.  He returned to his job as manager of the Max Theater in Cherokee from 1946 to 1963.  Tom served on the school board, two terms as mayor, and also as chief of the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department.  He died on 6 October 1972 at the age of 78 in Cherokee, OK and was buried in the Cherokee Municipal Cemetery.

Little, Clark R. was born in Ohio in 1920 the son of Harry F. and Josephine M. Little.  He was a member of the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 15 October 1940 at Cambridge, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Tuscarawas County, OH. 

Clark was assigned to “A” Battery.

He died in Tuscarawas, OH on 14 December 1971 at the age of 51.

 

Lobianco, Joseph S. was born in Tennessee on 22 December 1924.  He enlisted in the Army on 29 June 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Shelby County, TN.  Joseph was assigned to “C” Battery.  He was promoted to private first class on 1 January 1945 near Bining, France.

Joseph was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in November 1989 at the age of 64.  His last known address was in Millington, Shelby Co., TN.

 

Londeen, Dudley R. was born in Dickenson Co., Kansas in October 1917 the son of Carl and Elsie Londeen.  He was inducted in the Army on 4 April 1942 in Abilene, Dickenson Co., KS.

2nd Lieutenant Londeen was appointed Assistant Adjutant and AT of HQ Battery on 5 March 1943.

Later, 1st Lieutenant Londeen was Commander of “A” Battery.  He was promoted to captain prior to the end of the War.

 

Long, Leroy D. was assigned to HQ Battery.  Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Long was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Louthan, James F. was born in Oklahoma on 25 August 1914.  He enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Osage County, OK.  Jimmie was assigned to “C” Battery. His Military Occupational Specialties included: Automotive Mechanic (014),  Tank Mechanic, Minor Maintenance (660) and  Construction Equipment Mechanic (319).

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Louthan was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Lozono, Michael V. was a 2nd lieutenant who joined the Deuce near Guisberg, France on 5 February 1945 and was assigned to “A” Battery as the Reconnaissance Officer.

 

Lubbes, Charles B. was born in Oklahoma on 17 July 1922 the eldest son of Amy and James A. Lubbes.  He was of Dutch and Cherokee ancestry.  Charles enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Okmulgee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK. 

Technician Fifth Grade Lubbes was assigned to “C” Battery.

He was transferred to the 3rd Infantry Division in January 1945.

Charles died on 1 February 1984 at the age of 61.  He was buried in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Muskogee County, OK on 3 February 1984. 

 

Luckett, Edvin L. was born on 16 March 1916 in Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma, the son of Frank and Jessee Luckett. He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Okfuskee County, OK.  Edvin was assigned to Service Battery.  His MOS was Automotive Mechanic, Second Echelon (014).

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Luckett was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to Service Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Edvin embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. Lukachko, George was born 3 August 1914 in Pennsylvania.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 June 1941 at Fort Meade, Maryland.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.  George was assigned to “C” Battery. Private First Class Lukachko was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

George died on 23 November 1989 in PA at the age of 75.

 

MacZko, Nicholas M. was born in Pennsylvania on 25 July 1920.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cuyahoga County, OH.

He was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class MacZko was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Nicholas died in Ohio on 8 November 2005 at the age of 85.

 

Madsen, Charlie was a Private assigned to “A” Battery.  His MOS was Gun Crewman, Medium Artillery (864). 

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “A” Company, 58th Armored Infantry Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Philip Morris.  Charlie embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the S.S. Vulcania on 3 November 1945 and arrived in New York City on 10 November. 

 

Majnaric, William J. was born in Illinois in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA. 

William was assigned to “C” Battery.

On the morning of 3 January 1945, near the town of Bining in Lorraine, France, “C” Battery received a 10-round concentration of heavy caliber enemy artillery fire.  William and Corporal Howard D. Guiles were injured by fragments.  They were hospitalized.

Private First Class Majnaric was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Malloy, George W. was assigned to “C” Battery.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Malloy was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Marcum, Clarence H. was born in West Virginia on 27 June 1920.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Clarksburg, WV.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Putnam County, WV. 

Private Marcum was assigned to HQ Battery.  His SSN was (606).

He was promoted to private first class on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Clarence was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

He died on 8 October 1996 at the age of 76.  His last known address was in Cameron, Marshall Co., WV.

 

Markson, Allen W. was born in Minnesota on 27 January 1920 the son of Norwegian immigrants Arnold and Myrtle Markson. At the time of the 1930 U.S. Census, his family was residing at 428 Russell Avenue North in Minneapolis, MN.

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Markson was assigned to “A” Battery.

His MOS was Radio Operator, Low Speed (776).

Allen died on 30 November 1974 at the age of 54.  His last known address was in Hennepin Co., MN.  He was buried in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in South Minneapolis, MN.

 

Marroulis, Lewis G. was born 21 May 1915 in Ohio, the son of Greek immigrant Theodore Marroulis and wife Daisy.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Mahoning County, OH.  Lewis was assigned to “C” Battery. 

On 18 August 1944, near Allainville, France, two German aircraft, both ME 109’s, flew over the Battalion area about 1000 hours.  The unit’s anti-aircraft machine guns opened fire and although the planes continued on their course, later reports received from other units said that both planes had been damaged and had made forced landings not far distant.  During the firing Private Marroulis was wounded in the shoulder by a bullet from one of the Battalion’s machine guns.  He was evacuated to England and then the United States.  Lewis received a medical discharge from the service. 

He died in Ohio on 7 March 1999 at the age of 83.

 

Marsh, Woodrow W. was born in Virginia on 29 June 1918, the son of Filmore and Ella Marsh.  At the time of the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, the family was residing in Harrisburg, PA.  Woodrow was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Marsh was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He re-enlisted in the Army on 10 May 1946 at Harrisburg, PA. 

Woodrow died on 27 August 1999 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

 

Marshall, Opal W. was born in Arkansas in 1918, the son of Robert and Lizzie Marshall.  He grew up in Le Flore Co., Oklahoma.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  Opal was assigned to Service Battery.

 

Marshall, Pitman Herman was born in Maryland on 14 December 1912, the son of Herman and Alice Marshall. He enlisted in the Army on 22 June 1943 at Baltimore, Maryland.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Somerset County, MD.  Pitman was assigned to “C” Battery. 

He was promoted to private first class in March 1945.  Private First Class Marshall was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Pitman died on 31 August 2001 at the age of 88.  He is buried in Princess Anne, MD.

 

Martin, Frank was born in Ohio in 1916.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Trumbull County, OH.  Frank was assigned to “B” Battery.  Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Martin was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Martin, Robert T. was born in Oklahoma in 1921.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Enid, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Garfield County, OK.  Robert was assigned to the Service Battery.  Private First Class Martin was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

 

Marzocco, Joseph L. was born in Pennsylvania on 26 August 1916, the son of Italian immigrants Louis and Olympia Marzocco.

He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Pittsburgh, PA.  Joseph was assigned to HQ Battery.

Private First Class Joseph L. Marzocco was killed in action on 24 November 1944, along with T/4 Kenneth W. App, while on special duty as radio operators with the 2d French Armored Division.

Mathews, James R. was a corporal assigned to “A” Battery as a Forward Observer.  He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in March 1945. James left the 202nd on 15 March 1945 to report to the Infantry Officer Candidate School.

 

May, Oran C. was born in Oklahoma on 14 December 1911 the son of Laura M. and Ivan W. May.  He was in the National Guard when his unit was inducted into Federal service on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, OK. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.

After the War, Oran worked for Armour & Company in Oklahoma City for 23 years.  He died on 22 November 1969 at the age of 57.  He is buried in Winn View Cemetery near Watonga, OK.

 

McAnally, Hoyt Davis was born in Coal Hill, Johnson County, Arkansas on 15 January 1918, the son of William A. and Ruby McAnally. 

Hoyt worked as a cook.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 and was inducted at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was assigned to Battery “F” of the 189th Field Artillery at Fort Sill, OK.

During the afternoon of 12 September 1944, an observation post (OP) party consisting of Captain Harold E. Brown, 1st Lt. Gurdon B. Flagg, 2nd Lt Arthur Rice and Corporal Hoyt D. McAnally was pinned to the ground by enemy machine gun fire on Hill 376 overlooking Charmes, France.  Corporal McAnally was wounded in the thigh and died before he could be evacuated to an aid station.

McCart, John W. was born in Ohio in 1915 the son of Rose B. and George McCart.  He enlisted in the Army on 21 June 1941 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Jefferson County, OH. 

John was assigned to “C” Battery.

Corporal McCart was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 18 April 1980 in Cleveland, OH.

 

McConahay, James A. was a 1st lieutenant who was appointed as Service Battery DS on 5 March 1943. Later, Captain McConahay served as the “B” Battery Commander.  He was assigned as Battalion S-4 (Supply Officer) on 5 December 1944.  He later served as Service Battery Commander.

 

McDaniel, Ross T. was born in Kansas in 1917.  He enlisted in the Army on 6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK.  Ross was assigned to HQ Battery.  Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) McDaniel was promoted to Staff Sergeant on 15 April 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Ross was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

 

McMurray, Frank M. Jr. was born in Ohio on 11 May 1915 the son of Frank M. and Sarah McMurray.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Trumbull County, OH.  Pfc. McMurray was assigned to “B” Battery.  His MOS was Fire Control Instrument Operator, Field Artillery (645).

Corporal McMurray was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died in Warren, OH on 18 June 2002 at the age of 87.  Frank is buried in the Cherry Valley Township Cemetery in Andover, OH.

 

McQuate, Doyle E. was born in Ohio in August 1920, the son of Mabel McQuate.  His father died when Doyle was a child.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ashland County, OH.  Private McQuate was assigned to HQ Battery.  Private First Class McQuate was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Doyle lives in retirement in Ohio.

 

McQuilliams, Vernon C. was born in 1920. He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Watonga, Oklahoma when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Blaine County, OK.  Private McQuilliams was assigned to “C” Battery.

He was promoted to private first class on 9 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

 

Meharg, Douglas “Turk” was born in Oklahoma in 1911. He was a Sergeant in the National Guard when he enlisted in the Army on 15 September 1940 at Roff, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pontotoc County, OK.  Sergeant Meharg was assigned to HQ Battery.  Staff Sergeant Meharg was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Meirndorf, Glenn F. was born in Michigan in 1917, the son of Frank and Hazel Meirndorf.  He enlisted in the Army on 24 November 1942 at Kalamazoo, MI.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ingham County, MI.  Glenn was assigned to “A” Battery.  Private First Class Meirndorf was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Meltabarger, Archie Burnes “Dutch” was born in Oklahoma on 31 March 1912, the eldest son of Earnest and Minnie Meltabarger.  They lived on a farm in Cleveland County.  He joined the Army on 3 August 1942 at Pueblo, Colorado.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pottawatomie County, OK.  A.B. was assigned to “B” Battery. 

Corporal Meltabarger was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 18 December 1989 in McAlester, OK at the age of 77.  Archie was buried in Shady Grove Cemetery in Pittsburgh Co., OK.

 

Menas, Pete was born in West Virginia on 17 April 1914 the son of Czechoslovakian immigrants George and Mary Menas.

He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Clarksburg, WV.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Marion Co., WV.

Pete was assigned to “C” Battery.  On 7 December 1944 during combat near Lemberg, Moselle, Lorraine, France; Sergeant Menas and Corporal Milan E. Orishek were wounded by shell fragments when the elevation of one of the “C” Battery howitzers was too low and two projectiles burst in the trees about 150 yards in front of the battery.

Pete died on 3 November 2003 at the age of 89. His last known address was in Farmington, Marion Co., WV.  He was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Fairmont, WV.

 

Mika, Andy Jr. was born in Ohio on 18 October 1913 the son of Czechoslovakian immigrants Andy and Susan Mika.  His father was a coal miner and farmer.  Andy enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Akron, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Guernsey County, OH. 

Andy was assigned to HQ Battery.

Private First Class Mika was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on

23 June 1945.

Andy died in September 1980 at the age of 66.  His last known address was in Cumberland, Guernsey Co., OH.

 

Miller, Donal E. was born in Ohio in 1922, the eldest son on Floyd and Amy Miller.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Mahoning County, OH.  Donal was assigned to HQ Battery. He was appointed private first class on 19 July 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Later, Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Miller was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 28 September 1984 in Youngstown, OH, at the age of 61.

 

Miller, Glenn R. was born in Iowa in 1919.  He enlisted in the Army on 23 October 1941 at Chicago, Illinois.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Knox County, IL.  Glenn was assigned to “A” Battery. 

Sergeant Miller was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.

 

Miller, Robert F. was born in Kansas in 1912.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Clarksburg, West Virginia. Robert was assigned to HQ Battery.  His MOS was Fire Control Instrument Operator, Field Artillery (645).

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Miller was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to HQ Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Robert embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over 50 other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Miller, William A. was born in the District of Columbia in 1913.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Clarksburg, West Virginia.

William was assigned to “C” Battery.  Private First Class Miller was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Milner, Paul was born in Oklahoma in 1913.  He enlisted in the Army on 26 April 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Pittsburg County, OK.  His original ASN was 38022180.  Paul received a new serial number after he was promoted to Warrant Officer Junior Grade. He was assigned as the Battalion Personnel Adjutant. 

On the morning of 13 August 1944 at 1020 hours, near Marmouillé, France, a German reconnaissance car, unobserved by the Battalion’s perimeter defense, came up a back road into Service Battery’s position.  Before it was noticed, German occupants of the car fired a machine gun into the area, wounding Mr. Paul Milner five times: one bullet entering his left eye, one entering his stomach and three hitting his arm.  He was given first aid by Captain Eugene Thomas, Battalion Surgeon, and evacuated.

 

Mizerak, Paul was a private first class assigned to “A” Battery. His MOS was Rifleman (745).

 

Mobley, Wayne H. was born in Indiana on 24 August 1917 the son of O.L. and Dessie Mobley.  He grew up in Mount Carmel, Wabash Co., IL. 

Wayne enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Chicago, Illinois.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Wabash County, IL. 

Wayne was assigned to “A” Battery.  Staff Sergeant Mobley was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 29 November 2007 at the age of 90. His last known address was in Oklahoma City, OK.

 

Moon, Leo Jr. was born in North Carolina in April 1920 the son of Leo and Ruth Moon.  He enlisted in the Army on 3 December 1942 at Camp Croft, South Carolina.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Alamance County, North Carolina.

Leo was assigned to “A” Battery.

He died in Burlington, NC on 15 February 1991 at the age of 70.  His last known address was in Graham, Alamance Co., NC.

 

Moore, Norman H. was born on 16 November 1916 in Oklahoma, the son of Ira E. and Dollie E. Moore. Both of his parents later became officers in the Salvation Army.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Muskogee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK.  Norman was assigned to Service Battery. 

Private Moore and Private Erving A. Kelly were injured on 10 August 1944 when an ammunition truck and trailer in which they were riding missed a narrow bridge north of Fatines, France and left the road.

Norman died in Oklahoma on 12 December 1991 at the age of 75.

 

Moran, Joseph W. was born in Pennsylvania in 1925 the son of Peter and Katherine Moran.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 May 1943 at Pittsburgh, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.  Joseph was assigned to C Battery.  Private First Class Moran was promoted to Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) on 6 September 1945.

 

Morehead, Elbert R. Jr. was born in Oklahoma on 9 January 1916, the son of Elbert and Jane Morehead. He enlisted in the Army on 16 December 1940 at Cherokee, OK from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Alfalfa County, OK.

Private Morehead was assigned to “B” Battery.  His MOS was Basic (521).  He was undergoing unit training, but not yet qualified for an MOS.

In January 1945, he was transferred to the 45th Infantry Division in France.

Elbert died in Kansas in February 1977 at the age of 61.

 

Moreno, Osbaldo N. was born on 3 February 1915 in Beeville, Texas. 

Private Moreno was assigned to “C” Battery from the 2nd Replacement Depot on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France.  His MOS was Basic (521).  He was undergoing unit training, but not yet qualified for an MOS.

After the War, he worked as a machinist. 

Osbaldo died in Beeville, TX on 7 October 2005.

 

Morkunas, Peter T. Jr. was born in Pennsylvania on 20 August 1921. He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Pittsburgh, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Allegheny County, PA.

Peter was assigned to HQ Battery. His SSN was (606).

He was promoted to private first class on 12 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Private First Class Morkunas was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

He was promoted to Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) on 6 September 1945. 

Peter died on 21 November 1999 in Pennsylvania.

 

Morton, John K. was a 1st lieutenant who was appointed as Service Battery DS on 5 March 1943. Later, Captain Morton was assigned as Battalion Motor Officer on 5 December 1944.  He went on to serve as

Service Battery Commander and Battalion S-4 (Supply Officer).

 

Motis, Henry was a private assigned to “C” Battery.  His MOS was Full Track Driver (735).  He operated The M5 13-Ton High Speed Tractors used to tow the howitzers.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “B” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Henry embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over 50 other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Mottern, Charles C. was born in Indiana in July 1917, the son of Lee Mottern and Vera Cauper.  He enlisted in the Army on 26 November 1940 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Greene County, IN.  Charles was assigned to Service Battery.

He died in Indiana on 18 September 1997.

 

Mudge, David Lewis Jr. was born 28 October 1919 in Kansas City, Missouri, the eldest son of David L. Mudge and Barbara A. Mistele.  Barbara Mistele was the daughter of German immigrants.  David attended public schools in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Rosedale High School in 1938.

David was drafted and entered the U.S. Army on 18 April 1942 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 202nd Field Artillery for training at Camp Barkeley, Texas. The Battalion moved to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma on 1 March 1943, and then to Camp Howze, Texas on 18 October 1943.  David qualified as a marksman with the U.S. Carbine, Cal..30, M1.  After a few months, he was promoted to Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal).

He was promoted to Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) on 6 September 1945.  At the conclusion of World War II, David was temporarily assigned to the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion for the trip home.  On 13 November 1945, he embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U. S. Army Transport   Hagerstown Victory and arrived at Boston, Massachusetts on 24 November 1945.  David was honorably discharged from the Army at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 29 November 1945, with the rank of Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant). After the war, David was employed by Ford Motor Company at the Kansas City, Missouri Assembly Plant.  He married and had three children.

David retired from Ford Motor Company in 1982 after 36 years of automobile assembly.

He died on 5 September 1985 in Liberty, Missouri at the age of 65.

Mudik, Thomas was a Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) who was assigned to “C” Battery.  His MOS was Cook (060).

Mullins, Charles F. was born in Oklahoma in 1919.  He re-enlisted in the Army on 24 February 1941 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  At the time of his re-enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK.  Corporal Mullins was assigned to “A” Battery. 

Sergeant Mullins was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Mummert, Alvin C. was born in Pennsylvania in 1922, the son of Helen Mummert.  His father died when Alvin was a child. He enlisted in the Army on 14 December 1942 at Baltimore, Maryland.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Carroll County, MD.  Alvin was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Mummert was promoted to corporal in March 1945.  Alvin was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Nace, Merrill L. was born in Ohio on 26 July 1921.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Trumbull County, OH.  Merrill was assigned to “B” Battery. 

Private First Class Nace was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Merrill died on 8 November 2003 at the age of 82.  His last known address was in Windham, Portage Co., OH.

 

Nebesney, Michael M. was born on 13 November 1913 in Pennsylvania.

He enlisted in the Army on 11 December 1942 at Greensburg, PA. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Fayette County, PA. 

Michael was assigned to “C” Battery.  Private First Class Nebesney was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Michael died in May 1983 at the age of 69. 

 

Nechvatal, Lawrence J. was born 11 March 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of a Czechoslovakian immigrant.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cuyahoga County, OH.  Lawrence was assigned to HQ Battery. 

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Nechvatal was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.  He was later promoted to staff sergeant.

Lawrence died on 22 December 1989 in Cleveland, OH at the age of 72.  He was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Cuyahoga Co., OH. 

 

Neeley, Floyd was born in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Le Flore County, OK.  Floyd was assigned to Service Battery. 

 

Nelson, Harvey O. was born in Michigan on 5 December 1921.  He enlisted in the Army on 8 June 1942 at Traverse City, MI.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Iron County, MI.  Harvey was assigned to “B” Battery. 

Corporal Nelson was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

He died on 4 March 2004 at the age of 82.  His last known address was in Iron River, Iron Co., MI.

 

Nerge, Bernard F. was born in Schaumburg, Illinois on 25 April 1919, the son of Emil Nerge and Amalie Sporleder.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Chicago, IL.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cook County, IL.  Bernard was assigned to “A” Battery.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Nerge was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.  He was awarded a Clasp to the Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

After the War, Bernard was superintendent of the mails and assistant postmaster of the Mt. Prospect, Illinois post office before retiring.

Bernard died in Streamwood, IL on 27 January 1994 at the age of 74.  He was buried in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin, IL.

 

Noll, William E. was born in West Virginia in 1915.  He enlisted in the Army on 18 December 1942 at Clarksburg, WV.  William was assigned to HQ Battery. Private First Class Noll was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Norman, Herbert S. was born in Ohio in 1914, the son of Charles and Odessa Norman.  He enlisted in the Army on 21 June 1941 at Fort Hayes in Columbus, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Coshocton County, OH.  Private Norman was assigned to “C” Battery.

He was promoted to private first class on 9 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Private First Class Norman was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Herbert died on 5 April 1983 in Zanesville, OH.

 

Northup, John R. was the Battalion Executive Officer. He held the rank of major.

 

O’Brate, Elmer J. was born in Oklahoma on 12 July 1915, the son of Anthony and Sadie.  He enlisted in the Army on 19 January 1942 at Oklahoma City, OK from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Grant County, OK. 

Elmer was assigned to “A” Battery.  His MOS was Field Lineman (641).

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “C” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Technician Fifth Class (Corporal) O’Brate embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over 50 other men of the 202nd aboard.

Elmer died in May 1975 at the age of 59.

 

Odell, Max V. was assigned to the Service Battery. First Sergeant Odell was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

 

Oliver, Elvie Marsh was born in Oklahoma on 22 March 1917, the son of John Oliver and a Miss Aldridge. His mother died when he was an infant.  Elvie enlisted in the Army on 19 January 1942 at Oklahoma City, OK from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Wagoner County, OK.  He was assigned to “C” Battery. He died in Los Angeles, CA on 1 January 1994 at the age of 76.

 

Oothoudt, Otis W. was born in Minnesota on 7 December 1916, the son of Oral and Verna Oothoudt. 

1st Lieutenant Oothoudt was the Executive Officer of “C” Battery.  

During the night of 10 November 1944, near Ménil-Flin, Lorraine, France; the Battalion came under heavy bombardment from German 10.5cm artillery fire. Otis took an azimuth reading on the flash of the guns doing the firing which aided in locating and destroying the enemy battery.  He would later be awarded a Silver Star for "Gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States".  The Silver Star is the third highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces. 

He was assigned as Commanding Officer of “B” Battery on 5 December 1944 near Hinsbourg, Alsace, France.

On 29 December 1944, Lt. Oothoudt was presented the Silver Star by Brigadier General Edward Stanley Ott, Commanding General of XV Corps Artillery.

In Salzburg, Austria on 8 May 1945, Otis was promoted to captain.

He died on 13 June 1996 at the age of 79.  His last known address was in Winnebago, Faribault Co., MN.

 

Orishek, Milan E. was born on 29 July 1919 in Indiana. 

He was assigned to “C” Battery.  On 7 December 1944 during combat near Lemberg, Moselle, Lorraine, France; Corporal Orishek and Sergeant Pete Menas were wounded by shell fragments when the elevation of one of the “C” Battery howitzers was too low and two projectiles burst in the trees about 150 yards in front of the battery.

Corporal Orishek was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Milan re-enlisted on 31 October 1946 at MacDill Field, Florida in the Army Air Corps. 

He died on 25 November 1963 in Ventura, California at the age of 44.

 

Osborn, Dorsey V. was born in Missouri in 1915. He enlisted in the Army on 16 December 1940 at Cherokee, OK from the National Guard.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Alfalfa County, OK. 

Dorsey was assigned to “B” Battery.

Staff Sergeant Osborn was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Osborn, Jack P. was born in Missouri on 14 July 1916 the son of Arch L. and Hazel A. Osborn. They moved to Oklahoma prior to the 1920 U.S. Census in January of that year.  His father was a druggist in Quapaw, OK.

Jack enlisted in the Army on 7 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ottawa County, OK.

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Osborn was assigned to HQ Battery.

He was transferred to the 79th Infantry Division in January 1945.

Jack died on 13 May 1997 at the age of 80.  His last known address was in Picher, Oklahoma.

 

Overfelt, Arley R. was born in Oklahoma in 1920, the son of Lester and Iva Overfelt.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Enid, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Garfield County, OK. 

Corporal Overfelt was assigned to “C” Battery.

He died in Colorado on 24 March 1988 and is buried in the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

 

Owsiany, Edward was born in Pennsylvania in 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 23 October 1940 at Pittsburgh, PA.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Westmoreland County, PA. 

 

Pacheco, Guillermo A. was born on 8 April 1914.  He enlisted in the Army on 24 September 1941. Guillermo was assigned to “C” Battery. 

He was promoted to private first class on 1 January 1945 near Bining, France.

Guillermo died on 23 January 1993 in Gila Co., AZ at the age of 78.

 

Paladie, George was born on 30 April 1918.

He entered the Army on 7 March 1941. George was a corporal assigned to “B” Battery. His SSN was (603).  He was transferred to the 44th Infantry Division in January 1945.

George died on 20 September 1977in Chisago Co., Minnesota at the age of 59.  He was buried in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in South Minneapolis, MN.

Palash, L.B.Anton was born in Texas in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on  6 February 1941 at Oklahoma City, OK.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Oklahoma County, OK.  Anton was assigned to “C” Battery.  His MOS was Artillery Mechanic, Minor Maintenance (802).

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Palash was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “B” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Anton embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October. There were over 50 other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Panquerne, Reginald Joseph Jr. was born in Louisana on 27 August 1919, son of Reginald and Grace Panquerne.  He enlisted in the Army on 25 November 1940 from the National Guard.  Reginald was assigned to the Medical Detachment. Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Panquerne was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

He died in Texas on 13 February 2003 at the age of 83. Reginald is buried in the Houston National Cemetery.

 

Parker, William Henry was born in Garfield County, Oklahoma on 8 June 1919 the son of Earl F. Parker and Nora S. Sargent.  Bill attended high school in Enid, OK.  He was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard when his unit was inducted into Federal service on 16 September 1940 at Enid, OK. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Garfield County, OK.  Bill was assigned to “B” Battery.

On 8 November 1944 at 1210 hours, Lt. Flavey E. Baker and Private William H. Parker were in the vicinity of Migneville, France looking for a suitable observation post when their jeep ran over a mine.  Private Parker was killed instantly and Lt. Baker received a fracture of the left arm and lacerations on the face.  The vehicle was completely demolished

Parmer, Glenn G. was a captain appointed as Commander of HQ Battery on 5 March 1943. Later, Major Parmer was the Battalion S-3 or Operations Officer.

On 9 August 1944, he led a small party of soldiers to Eckminway(sp?), France to meet members of the French Forces of the Interior who had prisoners to transfer to the Americans.  The group transported 19 German soldiers and five women back to the Battalion area.  While the prisoners were being questioned, a German sniper fired a shot into the group of guards and Cpl. William W. Ingram and Pfc. Clifford L. Ray, both of Headquarters Battery, received minor cuts about the face from rock chips when the enemy’s bullet struck a stone wall nearby. The prisoners were later taken to the prisoner of war enclosure at Spay. The town of Spay was located just south of Le Mans, Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France.

Glenn was awarded a First Oak Leaf Cluster to his Bronze Star Medal on 16 June 1945.

 

Pasquinelli, Joseph L. was assigned to “A” Battery.  Private Pasquinelli was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 12 May 1944 in England.

 

Patterson, Wilburn W. was born in Oklahoma in 1921 or 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Minco, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Grady County, OK.  Wilburn was assigned to “B” Battery.  Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Patterson was promoted to staff sergeant on 2 September 1942 at Camp Gruber, OK.  He was promoted to technical sergeant on 20 April 1943, also at Camp Gruber.

Wilburn was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

He died on 7 August 2005 in Oklahoma City, OK.

 

Peak, Henry R. was born in Oklahoma in January 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 16 September 1940 at Muskogee, OK when his National Guard unit was inducted into Federal service.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Muskogee County, OK.

 

Peck, Norman A. Jr. was born in Ohio in 1920, the son of Norman and Hazel Peck.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Trumbull County, OH.  Norman was assigned to HQ Battery. Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Peck was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.

Norman died on 27 May 1982 in Girard, OH.

 

Perdue, Marion E. was born in Kentucky on 30 March 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 21 November 1942 at Indianapolis, Indiana.  Marion was assigned to “A” Battery.  Private First Class Perdue was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

Marion died in Indiana in October 1986 at the age of 64.

 

Perez, Joseph R. was born in 1910.  He enlisted in the Army on 3 July 1943 at New York City.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Queens, New York City.  Joseph was assigned to Service Battery.

Corporal Perez was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 13 October 1945.

 

Perkins, Aubrey B. was born in Illinois in 1921.  He enlisted in the Army on 22 June 1942 at Chicago, IL.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Cook County, IL.  Aubrey was assigned to HQ Battery.

Staff Sergeant Perkins was promoted to master sergeant on 6 September 1945.

 

Peschong, William M. was assigned to Service Battery.  His MOS was Automotive Mechanic, Second Echelon (014).

Technician Fourth Grade (Sergeant) Peschong was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1945 near Guisberg, France.

Peterlin, Andrew Jr. was born in Ohio in 1921. He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Akron, OH.  Andrew was assigned to HQ Battery.

Technician Fifth Grade (Corporal) Peterlin was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 23 June 1945.  He was promoted to technician fourth grade (sergeant) on 6 September 1945.

 

Petty, Kenneth M. was born in Oklahoma in 1920.  He enlisted in the Army on 4 August 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Lawrence County, MO. 

Kenneth was assigned to “B” Battery.  Corporal Petty was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Phillips, Emmerson A. was born in Illinois in 1920. He enlisted in the Army on 27 October 1941 at Chicago, IL.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Stephenson County, IL. 

Emmerson was assigned to “C” Battery.  His SSN was (603).  He was promoted to sergeant on 9 January 1945 near Schmittville, France.

Sergeant Phillips was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Piispanen, Edward Victor was born on 26 December 1916 in Minnesota, the son of Finnish immigrants Jerry Piispanen and Lydia Makela.  His MOS was Gun Crewman, Medium Artillery (SSN 864). Edward was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Piispanen was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “C” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Edward embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October.  There were over fifty other men of the 202nd aboard.

Edward died on 15 June 1987 in Minnesota at the age of 70.

 

Piper, August was born in Ohio in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, OH.  August was assigned to “B” Battery.  Private First Class Piper was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Pisaneschi, Ernest was born in Pennsylvania on 17 December 1905.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Trumbull County, OH.  Private Pisaneschi was assigned to “A” Battery. 

He was promoted to Private First Class in March 1945. 

His MOS was Field Lineman (SSN 641). 

At the conclusion of the War, he was temporarily assigned to “A” Battery, 772nd Field Artillery Battalion for the trip home.  Their staging area was Camp Lucky Strike.  Ernest embarked from Le Havre, France aboard the U.S.A.T. ARGENTINA on 18 October 1945 and arrived in New York City on 25 October. There were over 50 other men of the 202nd aboard.

 

Pisarcik, George W. was born in Pennsylvania in 1918.  He enlisted in the Army on 20 June 1941 at Cleveland, Ohio.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Ashtabula County, OH.  George was assigned to “C” Battery. Corporal Pisarcik was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Pitt, Walter C. was a 2nd lieutenant and Liaison Pilot who joined the Battalion on 1 January 1945 near Gros-Réderching, Moselle, Lorraine, France.

On 14 January 1945, while the Battalion was in combat near Gros-Réderching, France; Lt. Sheldon Greenberg, Lt. Walter C. Pitt and T/3 Loren Kirby departed for the 7th Army Liaison Pilot’s and Air Observer’s Rest Camp at Grenoble, France.

Walter left for Marseilles, France on 4 February 1945 to obtain a Cub plane to replace the Battalion’s second one which was lost two months earlier.  Lt. Pitt returned with the L-4 Grasshopper observation and liaison aircraft on 14 February 1945.  It was the first time since November 1944 that the Battalion had two planes.

Walter left the Deuce-O-Deuce on 21 February 1945 for a new assignment with the 79th Infantry Division. 

 

Pittman, James E. was born in North Carolina in 1923.

He enlisted in the Army on 3 December 1943 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Johnston County, NC.

Private Pittman was assigned to Service Battery on 3 January 1945 near Bining, France from the 2nd Replacement Depot.  His MOS was Rifleman (745).  He was later was assigned to “A” Battery.

 

Pocklington, Joseph W. was assigned to “C” Battery.  Corporal Pocklington was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 21 May 1945 in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Pomeroy, Erwin W. was born in July 1922.  He enlisted in the Army on 17 December 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Mahoning County, OH.  Erwin was assigned to “C” Battery.

His SSN was (531). Erwin was transferred to the 71st Replacement Battalion in January 1945.
