Led by former Flying Tiger Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, one of the best-known fighter squadrons in the Pacific Theater of World War II was the Black Sheep squadron of the United States Marine Corps. Flying the fast and rugged Chance-Vought F4U Corsair, the Marine aviators of VMF-214 made a name for themselves with their accomplishments in and around the islands of New Georgia, New Britain, New Ireland, Bougainville and the Russell Islands. Pappy’s flying days in the War ended in January of 1943 when his Corsair was shot down during a fighter sweep over Rabaul, but not before he claimed his 26th victory. Maj. Boyington spent the remainder of the War as a POW.
