A World War II color photograph of the Grumman F6F Hellcat, the plane that brought about the demise of the Japanese Zero. Designed to outperform the Zero in all aspects, the rugged, fast and highly-maneuverable Hellcat gave Navy pilots the plane they were waiting for. Commander David McCampbell, the U.S. Navy’s top ace of World War II with 34 victories, aptly nick-named the F6F “The Ace Maker”.
This World War II color photograph depicts a Hellcat with the red-bordered national insignia that was applied for only two months, July-August of 1943.
