Early on the morning of April 18th, 1942, the U.S.S. Hornet turned into the wind and began launching Lt. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle's sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers for the surprise raid on Tokyo. This photograph was taken as one of the first B-25’s left the carrier’s deck, and depicts the rough seas that were present at the beginning of this historic mission.
