Flying Tiger pilot David Lee “Tex” Hill poses in front of his Curtiss P-40 in Rangoon, Burma, January 1942. Prior to joining the American Volunteer Group in 1941, Tex Hill was an aviator in the U.S. Navy. Once with the Flying Tigers, Hill began tallying his aerial victories, ending up with 18 confirmed kills by the end of World War II. During his time with the Flying Tigers, Hill rose through the ranks to lead the Panda Bears, the 2nd Squadron of the AVG. Intelligent and courageous, Tex Hill’s accomplishments earned him both the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
