Captain Andrew D. Turner, a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, gives the “OK” sign from the cockpit of his North American P-51 Mustang at an airfield in Italy, September, 1944. Originally based in North Africa and flying Curtiss P-40 Warhawks, the Tuskegee Airmen were attached to the 15th U.S. Army Air Force. Transitioning to the superb P-51 and flying from bases in Italy, they soon earned a name for themselves as courageous protectors of the bomber crews they escorted into Nazi airspace.
