Not knowing for sure what is
on the other side of the thick hedgerow, American GI’s move carefully down a
dirt road in Normandy shortly after D-Day.
The infantryman nearest the camera has his bayonet mounted on his M1 Garand,
and he appears to be standing over the body of a fallen GI, with an ammunition
box of .30 caliber belted machine gun rounds on the ground nearby. Communication
lines for field telephones are laid in the road, and a line of GI’s is visible
in the background making their way down the lane.
