B-17G Flying Fortresses Dreambaby and Lucky Me! of the 533rd Bomb Squadron, 381st Bomb Group, 1st Combat Wing, 8th USAAF. Ridgewell, England. The 381st flew a total
of 297 missions over Europe and participated in all of the major air campaigns there. Dreambaby shows unpainted replacement rudder, elevators and wing panels due to battle damage. Despite it's battle-scarred appearance, the B-17 did survive to V-E Day. Lucky Me!, however, was shot down over Frankfurt, Germany, on September 25, 1944, with the loss of pilot Lt. Oscar Gills and his crew.
These veteran aircraft were photographed summer 1944. The finished piece measures 10 3/4" x 13 3/4". The photograph is matted in medium olive green, with a descriptive caption below it.
