The Rugged Curtiss P-40

With 13,738 P-40's built between April, 1940, and November, 1944, this famous Curtiss aircraft was the third-largest produced American World War II fighter behind the Republic P-47 and North American P-51. Although its performance wasn't on par with frontline German and Japanese fighters, the P-40 was successful in combat. The P-40 was dependable, rugged and, due to the weight of its armor protection, very fast in a dive. Pilots learned to use the aircraft's strengths to their advantage.

The photograph at left shows a P-40B of the 18th Pursuit Group in flight over Hawaiian waters. At right, a photograph taken later in the War, is a training flight of P-40F's. The "F" model, powered by a Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12, differed from the earlier model P-40's which had an Allison V-12 engine.

The finished piece measures 12 3/4" x 25 1/2". It is matted in blue-gray. The frame is Gunmetal (other colors are available. Contact us for info). Please see the "Frame Info" tab for complete information on how we frame our artwork. Item price includes ground shipping to the continental U.S.
