The B-25 Mitchell Medium Bomber
The North American B-25 Mitchell was one of the most versatile aircraft of World War Two. Originally designed as a fast, medium land-based bomber, the B-25 was adapted to perform many missions, one of the most famous being the Doolittle Raid in 1942 when 16 B-25's took off from the USS Hornet to bomb Tokyo. Another notable adaptation of the B-25 was it's conversion into a gunship. The Plexiglas nose was replaced by a solid nose containing up to ten .50 caliber machine guns, and even a 75mm canon in some planes. The resulting effect was a devastating amount of firepower that could sink ships!
