P-40 Flight Training
Before graduating to front-line fighter aircraft such as the P-47 and P-51, U.S. Army Air Force fliers trained in models that weren't considered as "hot" as the Thunderbolt and Mustang. A step up from the advanced trainers, aircraft such as the Curtiss P-40 gave them valuable experience in a high-performance fighter. At left, four P-40's make a low pass at Paine Field in Everett, Washington, 1942. The P-38E on the tarmac is one of only 210 "E" models built. Over 9,000 P-38's were built during the war. At right, a training flight of P-40's flies in formation over Randolph Field, Texas, 1943.
