Framing History presents a Limited Edition Frame that incorporates one of the most famous photographs taken on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Taken by United States Coast Guard CPHoM Robert F. Sargent (picture credit: National Archives) immediately after unloading infantry onto Omaha Beach, this photograph has become representative of the invasion of Normandy. The photograph is framed with a copy of General Eisenhower's D-Day letter to the Allied Forces. The letter has been signed by Staff Sergeant Robert Slaughter, one of the first men ashore on Omaha that morning. Sgt. Slaughter was most gracious to sign the letters. Per his request, with each purchase, a generous donation will be made to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation in Bedford, Virginia. Sgt. Slaughter was instrumental in the founding of the Memorial, a tribute to his comrades and all those who began the Liberation of Europe on that June day in 1944.

The initial assault on Omaha was led by the brave men of the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. Met with murderous fire from the German defenders, the 116th suffered appalling casualties as they struggled ashore and made their way across the wide beach.

Sgt. Slaughter landed as a member of D Company.

He enlisted in the Virginia National Guard at the age of 15, was an original member of the 29th Ranger Battalion, and returned to the 29th Division late in 1943. He served with the 116th through the rest of the War, earning two Purple Hearts. He has inscribed each letter with the following:

S/Sgt Bob Slaughter

Company D, 116th Inf.

29th Division

D-Day to Elbe River

This piece of framed history is limited to twelve copies.

The artwork also features an authentic reproduction 29th Infantry Division shoulder patch, a photograph of Sgt. Slaughter that was taken prior to D-Day, and a copy of Ike's original D-Day message: "Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you..." The letter has been copied from an original in our collection. The photograph has been archival processed.

The finished piece measures 11" x 23". It is matted in a dark olive green, with a lower light green mat upon which the 29th Patch and photograph are mounted. The frame is black metal (other colors are available. Contact us for info). A solid wood frame is also available (see a similar example pictured below). Please see the "Frame Info" tab for complete information on how we frame our artwork. Item price includes ground shipping to the continental U.S.
