As the Allies were charging across Western Europe in late1944, advances were led by the combined operation of United States Armor and Infantry. Once freed from the beachheads of Normandy and the bitter fighting of the hedgerow country, U.S. forces utilized their superior mobility to race across the French Countryside. Paris was soon liberated, and the Allies then set about the task of freeing the Low Countries, and battling their way into Germany.

The photograph depicts a squad of foot soldiers from the 60th Infantry Regiment advancing into a Belgian town on September 9, 1944. They are armed with M-1 Garand rifles, and the GI in the rear is carrying a B.A.R. The Sherman Tank has additional armor plating welded-on to protect the ammunition bin positions in the hull and turret. The Sherman, an M4 model armed with the 75mm gun, has also been equipped with one of the Cullin Hedgerow Devices that allowed the tank to punch through the nearly-impenetrable hedgerows encountered in France. The Cullin Device, initially constructed of pieces of beach obstacles from Normandy beaches, is yet another example of American ingenuity and improvisation that was so prevalent during World War II.

The finished piece measures 17"x14". The photograph (picture credit: U.S. Army Signal Corp) is matted in medium olive.

Mounted below the photograph are authentic reproductions of an Armored Command shoulder patch, Marksmen Badge with Auto-Rifle Qualification Bar, U.S. Enlisted Uniform Insignia, and a Presidential Unit Citation award, which was earned by the 60th Infantry Regiment. The frame is black (other colors are available. Contact us for info). Item price includes ground shipping to the continental United States.
